Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, Early Literacy will play a critical role in ensuring that Mastery's K-2 students receive exceptional Common Core aligned literacy instruction that builds foundational reading and writing skills and prepares them well for success in grades 3-12 and ensures they are ready for college and career. The Assistant Director, Early Literacy will serve as a trusted advisor to schools by providing effective services and supports to help them reach their early literacy goals, including leader and teaching coaching & PD and instructional planning resources

Duties and Responsibilities:

Demonstrates a deep understanding of and an ability to hold an incredibly high bar for K-2 literacy programming.

Provide effective strategic supports to teachers and Assistant Principals, including:Direct teacher and/or Assistant principal coaching focused on providing real-time feedback to improve instruction, especially for priority schools that need more support to improve early literacy outcomes

Designing and facilitating high-quality teacher and Assistant Principal professional development with a focus on strong practice and execution

Drafting high-quality unit plans and other instructional planning resources that provide school leaders and teachers with clear guidance on how to implement strong K-2 literacy instruction in the classroom

Analyze network-level early literacy student achievement data and determine actionable next steps that will improve outcomes

Contribute to the planning and implementation of Mastery's K-2 ELA strategic initiative to establish a network-wide common foundation for our early literacy program model beginning in Fall 2019

Support the implementation of Mastery's Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant from the US Department of Education, including parent training on early literacy best practices, supporting schools in developing stronger classroom libraries and distributing books to students and families

Contribute generatively to a high-functioning K-2 early literacy team, K-12 Humanities team and the NST academic team

Strong early literacy content knowledge, including research-based best practices

Be deeply familiar with the Common Core shifts and standards and possess exceptional English/Language Arts content knowledge and national models of curricula.

Have strong experience analyzing and interpreting instructional data, including distilling key trends and identifying data-driven priorities to improve instruction and student learning.

Have strong communication and interpersonal skills - exceptionally high emotional intelligence and the ability to motivate and influence adults.

Ability to design and facilitate engaging professional development experiences that incorporate adult learning best practices.

Ability to accurately diagnose classroom level instruction and identify high-leverage next steps to improve instruction.

Ability to deliver clear, concise and well-framed feedback to school leaders and teachers that will significantly improve early literacy instructional practices.

Ability to manage short-term and long-term projects successfully.

Be detail-oriented and highly organized with strong analytical writing skills.

Have experienced a high level of measurable success working with low-income students of color.

Have zest and a sense of humor and operates as a team-player.

Thrives in a high-accountability, fast-paced environment.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree

At least four years of K-2 teaching experience with a strong track record of increase student achievement at a low-income school primarily serving students of color

Previous experience with school leadership, coaching and/or managing adults

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as traveling to network campuses and maneuvering in office space-reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; Must be able to sit for up to four (4) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard and mouse and typing.
