Special Education Teacher/Deaf and Hard of Hearing (18/19 SY)

SUMMARY

Teaches academic and social skills to deaf/hard of hearing students (DHH) using various methods of communication to receive and convey language.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provide direct instruction, modeling and support of DHH students across educational settings.

Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop appropriate modifications and accommodations for DHH students in accordance with the IEP.

Encourage students to participate through their preferred manual sign system or primary mode of communication in classroom learning experiences in order to ensure comprehension of subject manner.

Plan, teach, support and document the development of effective friendships and social relationships.

Utilize an assessment system for progress monitoring student achievement toward IEP goals.

Demonstrate use of scientifically-based research best practice instructional strategies.

Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment and materials.

Develop, provide and implement appropriate individual student activity adjustments and assist in the development of behavior intervention plans as needed.

Communicate regularly with parents regarding their student's progress, including contact with parents by weekly folder, note, e-mail or phone call.

Maintain confidentiality regarding records and information.

Conducts case conferences, write goals and maintain timelines using ISTART7.

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of special education law. Perform the duties of Teacher of Record as outlined in Article 7.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.A. or B.S.)

At least two (2) years of successful teaching experience in working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

LICENSES:

Must hold a valid Indiana license to teach Deaf or Hard of Hearing students in appropriate school setting.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to speak grammatically correct English. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, curriculum guides, or state and school board regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, administrators, business and community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully an individual should be knowledgeable with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and IPS On Line.
