SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist in instructing and evaluating individuals or small groups of English Language Development (ELD) students in different grade levels and subject areas.
  2. Plan lessons and assignments for ELD students in collaboration with certified staff.
  3. Maintain contact and collaborate with teachers, staff, and administration to provide program support.
  4. Assist and support ELD students transitioning into mainstream classes, community, and work.
  5. Interpret for ELD students, teachers, and staff in the classroom, extracurricular settings, and bilingual parent-teacher conferences.
  6. Translate district information when feasible and approved by ELD program coordinator.
  7. Service the ELD Family Registration Center on a rotating basis as needed by language.
  8. Perform liaison service between school, home and community, maintaining appropriate confidentiality by advising teachers and staff on student progress, suggesting possible ways of dealing with ELD students, communicating with parents by conferences and/or home visits, and attending ELD and community meetings.
  9. Maintain appropriate student records to document performance and success of ELD students as per district procedures and state regulations.
  10. Assess behaviors, academic skill levels, and learning styles by using assessment tools and available information under the general guidance of the lead teacher, building administrator, and/or program coordinator.
  11. Advise ELD students, teachers, and parents in course selection, career guidance, grade placement, and community services as appropriate.
  12. Promote a secure environment that meets educational and emotional needs of students.
  13. Show flexibility in providing professional ELD services for Spokane Public Schools as requested.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. Required: AA Degree, B.A. Degree, or B.S. Degree; or 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college; or pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  3. Demonstrated ability to speak, write, and comprehend English and target language clearly.
  4. Experience in a broad and varied academic setting and ability to prepare work, and ability to instruct students in a variety of subjects.
  5. Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and a thorough knowledge of the cultures involved.
  6. Prior recent experience working with school-age children in the classroom.
  7. Demonstrate flexibility in dealing with challenging situations.
  8. Demonstrate ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, staff, and parents in a confidential manner.
  9. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
