Director, Secondary Curriculum

Summary:

The Director, Secondary Curriculum is responsible for providing opportunity for high student achievement through district-wide leadership for curriculum program development and management. It gives system-wide support in the curriculum areas for grades 6-12; including but not limited to Mathematics, Literacy, Global Studies, Science and World Languages. It maintains responsibility for curriculum development and program management; maintains expertise in the curriculum areas with the ability to interpret and apply policy to program implementation. The Director, Secondary Curriculum must collaborate across CMS departments to meet the needs of the Learning Communities in order to achieve the district goals of the Strategic Plan

Essential Duties:
  • Directs the development and implementation of the following district-wide plans with uniform expectations for student achievement: writing and reading, mathematics, science, social sciences, global studies, JROTC, driver's education and world languages.
  • Recommends the appointment of personnel; provides/coordinates staff training; evaluates assigned staff, works with employees to improve performance.
  • Develops and manages work plans for the Secondary Curriculum department, assigns work activities, projects and programs; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures.
  • Facilitates curriculum support to Learning Communities and schools.
  • Identifies the needs of the assigned program/curriculum areas.
  • Assists school staff in organizing and managing Secondary Curriculum studies as an integral part of all subject areas.
  • Provides training in the Secondary Curriculum to school staff by modeling and coaching effective strategies to content area instruction.
  • Ensures district initiatives align with state initiatives and Common Core Curriculum, educational legislation, legislative actions and NC DPI policies
  • Writes, submits, manages and oversees grants and federal and state programs related to the Secondary Curriculum
  • Prepares and administers the budget for programs in collaboration with the Executive Director for Learning and Teaching.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Minimum
  • Master's Degree in education in one of the following areas: reading and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and/or world language
  • Four years of experience in educational leadership, management and supervision of staff

Desirable
  • Doctorate in reading, mathematics, science, literacy, social studies, world languages, educational leadership and/or curriculum and instruction.
  • Six years of experience in educational leadership, management and supervision of staff

Licensing / Certification Requirements:
  • NC Teaching Certificate required.
  • Possession or ability to obtain valid NC Curriculum & Instructional Specialist license required.
  • NC Principal or Superintendent License preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Common Core Curriculum and the NC Essential Standards
  • Knowledge of the Strategic Plan in order to ensure all work efforts and initiatives are in alignment.
  • Knowledge of the principles of organization, administration and personnel management.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of budgeting, finance, and governmental accounting to ensure that department is operating efficiently, complying with laws, maintaining accurate record keeping, and making fiscally responsible decisions.

Physical Requirements:The work is primarily sedentary. It requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work, at times, requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights. The work requires activities frequently involving driving automotive equipment.
