DESCRIPTION


The Mathematics Instructional Coach is a leadership and instructional coaching role aimed at driving Bright Star School's vision for high quality mathematics instruction. The Coach will work closely with the VP of Academic Initiatives to implement a strategic improvement plan (visioning initiative), ultimately increasing student learning of and achievement in math. The Mathematics Coach must take a hands-on approach, working with groups and individual educators from the system-wide level to the classroom level. This may include modeling lessons, helping teacher groups to plan instruction, creating system-wide structures and procedures, and facilitating professional development or individualized teacher learning.

Qualifications
Desired Qualifications:
  • At least five years of successful math teaching experience preferred
  • Experience in development, preparation, and presentation of professional development preferred
  • Specific knowledge of common core math content, learning progressions, and key instructional shifts
  • Specific knowledge of developmentally appropriate and standards-based assessment, unit, and lesson design
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to collaborate with various stakeholders and synthesize multiple perspectives
  • The ability to work effectively with adult learners, modeling and facilitating purposeful reflective thinking
  • The ability to skillfully offer constructive feedback to facilitate change
  • The ability to seek resources and solutions to effectively solve problems
  • The ability to organize and prioritize projects and tasks


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND Responsibilities
include the following, as well as other duties and Responsibilities that may be assigned:

Facilitate Teacher Learning
  • Coach math teachers with a focus on improvement of student learning and alignment to the visioning initiative
    • Gather and analyze relevant and reliable data to inform and support progress of the visioning initiative
  • Coach math teachers using the Bright Star Schools Teacher Induction and Development Consortia (Induction) processes, including but not limited to inquiry and observation cycles, goal setting, and data analysis
  • Facilitate teacher analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments
  • Facilitate professional learning experiences during Summer Design Institute (SDI), organization-wide PDs, school site PDs, and wherever appropriate
  • Act as a mentor teacher through the Induction program for 2-3 math educators, which includes meeting and/or observing/conferencing weekly with mentees to facilitate growth towards professional goals and promote strong skills in reflection, curiosity, and persistence

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders
  • Collaborate with VP of Academic Initiatives to implement and refine the visioning initiative
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to plan, execute, and refine professional learning experiences including but not limited to SDI, beginning of year and org-wide PDs
  • Work with math cadre leaders and teachers to refine common core standards based pacing plans for each grade level.
  • Work with relevant stakeholders to develop school structures and classroom intervention plans that facilitate the improvement of math instruction and appropriate student placement
  • Act as cadre leader in the event there is no qualified applicant
  • Attend mentor teacher/instructional coach trainings
  • Maintain the confidentiality of schools, teachers, and classrooms

INTERACTIONS WITH TEACHERS:
  • Establish and maintain a trusting, confidential and non-evaluative relationship with teachers in order to help develop their autonomy as professionals
  • Assist math teachers in reflecting on and analyzing their practice, reviewing student work and using relevant data to inform instruction and enhance student learning
  • Support the development of a mathematics classroom culture where equity, access, and student agency are at the heart of learning
  • Use knowledge of equity principles to deepen a teachers' application of California Teaching Standards and Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
  • Model innovative, research-based teaching methodologies through techniques such as co-teaching and demonstration lessons, where appropriate
  • Provide differentiated professional learning that supports teacher agency, in both individual and group settings, as needed
  • Encourage math teachers to identify instructional resources and support throughout the entire school community
  • Incorporate technology and data analysis to advance both teacher learning and classroom practice




INTERACTIONS WITH PRINCIPALS AND HOME OFFICE STAFF:


  • Maintain open lines of communication with VP of Academic Initiatives to ensure coherence between teacher needs and the visioning initiative
  • Maintain open lines of communication with the principal to ensure the individual needs of teachers are being supported
  • Invite ongoing collaboration with teachers, principals, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure coherence among coaching activities, school site priorities, and visioning initiative
  • Weekly check-ins with VP of Academic Initiatives
  • Support current cognitive engagement initiative by performing walkthroughs with BSSCA administrative team, as needed
  • Check-ins with other relevant stakeholders, as necessary


PROFESSIONALISM IN THE WORKPLACE:

  • Maintain documentation (including but not limited to):
  • Coaching logs to record all interactions with teachers
  • Coaching data analysis/records to drive decision making for teacher development and student achievement
  • Current and accurate coaching calendar reflecting scheduled meetings
  • Demonstrate the highest standards of honesty, integrity, flexibility, and responsiveness
  • Establish a flexible work schedule that may extend beyond traditional school hours
  • Handle information in a confidential manner in accordance with established policies and legal require ments (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to travel between five school sites
  • Normal, routine levels of activity related to bending, carrying, climbing, hearing, lifting, reaching, sitting, standing, vision and walking, and may also involve above-average levels of activity at times that can't always be anticipated

HOURS:

  • Full-Time
  • Will begin work for the 2018-19 school year

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:
  • Status: Full Time; Position will be on a Teacher Calendar, but will resume work 3 weeks before Summer PD begins
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA (Traveling between 5 school sites)
