    $3,774.00* - $4,413.00 per month (SR-18, 10-month & 12-month)

    *A School Year Differential ranging from $101.59 to $118.81 per month will be added to the base salary for all 10-month positions, contingent upon funding.

    $4,079.00* - $4,777.00 per month (SR-20, 10-month & 12-month)

    *A School Year Differential ranging from $109.81 to $128.61 per month will be added to the base salary for all 10-month positions, contingent upon funding.

    $4,413.00* - $5,167.00 per month (SR-22, 10-month & 12-month)

    *A School Year Differential ranging from $118.81 to $139.11 per month will be added to the base salary for all 10-month positions, contingent upon funding.
  • NOTE: Department of Education employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations. All new external applicants will be placed on the initial step of the salary range. However, placement above the initial step of the salary range will be based on special characteristics and critical needs of the position, an applicant's exceptional qualifications, the availability of funds, and other relevant factors. Such appointments require prior approval.

  • NOTE: Temporary positions may be extended year to year, dependent upon funding and departmental needs. Making yourself eligible for temporary positions increases your employment possibilities and may lead to permanent opportunities.

    A person hired for a temporary position may also become a temporary employee upon satisfactory completion of the initial probation period of at least six months. Once a temporary employee, you would be eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits as afforded to an employee in a permanent position, with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.
  • Summary:
    Social Workers seek to improve the overall quality of life of people within the context of their environment through the remediation and prevention of their problems, and by improving accessibility, accountability and coordination of service delivery among a variety of professionals and/or agencies tasked with providing appropriate services to clients. Social Workers establish working relationships of mutual respect and trust with the clientele served, and utilize a variety of helping interventions to enable these clients to function as effectively as possible.

    The Social Worker II is the entry level in the series. The Social Worker III and IV reflect positions which are distinguished by the complexity of assigned cases and level of authority assumed by the worker.
  • Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

    To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
  • Education Requirement:
    In accordance with Act 238, SLH 2005, applicants must possess a bachelor's (BSW) or master's degree in social work (MSW) from a program of study accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, or a doctoral degree in social work from a college or university accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or a comparable regional accreditation body.

    In addition to the knowledge and abilities required to perform the work of this series, persons with a social work degree, by virtue of their education and training also bring with them knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques, trends, research, values, ethical standards and practices of professional social work; theories, methods and techniques of psychosocial assessment and diagnostic impressions in order to evaluate and provide treatment for the social service needs of individuals, couples, families and groups to prevent psychosocial dysfunction, disability or impairment including emotional, mental and behavioral disorders; social casework principles, practices, methods and techniques, including group work, community organization and planning; social work research methods and techniques; and the ability to apply professional social work knowledge, principles, ethics and skills in direct practice with individuals and groups, and in supervising other social workers and human service professionals; understand and demonstrate skill in the application of social work principles, methods and practices; and effectively communicate the principles of social work practice or a specific discipline within the practice of social work.

    Note: Applicants who will graduate within six months, and will meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements upon their graduation will be accepted for examination. If you are graduating within six months with a Bachelor of Social Work degree or Master of Social Work degree, please submit a copy of your official transcript of coursework completed thus far and a letter from your department head or registrar verifying your current enrollment in school, your expected graduation date and major with your application. Final official transcripts showing receipt of the degree must be submitted upon graduation.

    Specialized Experience Requirement:
    None for level II; for level III, none for candidates who possess a MSW/PhDSw and one (1) year for candidates who possess a BSW; and, for level IV, none for PhDSW, one (1) year for MSW, and two (2) years for BSW of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved helping individuals and their families find satisfactory ways of identifying their problems, coping with their conditions, and functioning effectively within their environments. Depending on the employment setting and the kinds of clients served, job duties and responsibilities may vary, although typically the work will include the identification and evaluation of the client's problems and needs; the development of a service or treatment plan, sometimes in tandem with other professionals working in an interdisciplinary team; the initiation and implementation of the service plan, either directly or through the authorization of provider/vendor services; monitoring of services being provided; and evaluation/assessment of the client's progress, with amendments to the service/treatment plan made as appropriate.

    Non-Qualifying Social Worker Experience:
    Experience which did not provide the necessary professional human services concepts and theories and the background and knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of professional human services work will not be considered as qualifying experience. Examples of non-qualifying experience include, but are not limited to:

    1) Experience providing supportive services to professional Human Services Specialists, Social Workers, Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists, Public Housing Managers, or other professional workers in such programs as public welfare, family court, etc., where predominant tasks included, e.g., transporting persons or making phone calls to confirm/monitor appointments; and,
    2) Experience determining the eligibility of applicants/recipients for benefits under a public welfare program such as medical assistance, food stamps, and other benefits.

    Driver's License:
