The Assistant Deputy General Counsel will run the day-to-day operations of CPS' federal Litigation Unit and supervise the attorneys representing the Board and its agents in federal court and in various administrative forums including EEOC, IDHR, HRC, and the Office of Civil Rights. The Assistant Deputy General Counsel will do the following:

  • Manage a team of seven attorneys and two administrative support staff members;

  • Supervise federal litigation, including cases involving claims of discrimination, retaliation, harassment, civil rights violations, and excessive force;

  • Represent the Board in high-profile federal cases in which the Board and/or CPS employees are named defendants;

  • Serve as first chair for trial attorney;

  • Manage outside counsel; and

  • Engage in settlement negotiations and make settlement recommendations.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, an Assistant Deputy General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education and License Required : Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois.

Type of Experience and Number of Years : Seven or more years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Admission to the trial bar of the Northern District of Illinois or another jurisdiction with comparable criteria for entry;

  • Deep familiarity with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Evidence;

  • Some experience with federal employment discrimination statutes;

  • Prior supervisory experience and a demonstrated ability to manage personnel of differing abilities;

  • Possess the ability to quickly analyze a problem/question and decide the level of importance and when higher level intervention;

  • Capable of functioning effectively with opposing counsel, co-counsel and any Board agents whose decisions are being challenged in state and federal court;



Residency requirement : Board employees are required to be actual residents of the City of Chicago within six months of beginning employment and are required to maintain residency during the course of their employment.
