ABOUT OUR DISTRICT:

The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all - including students who fall behind or have been considered "hard to serve" for a host of reasons. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged Superintendent Jaime Alicea with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 21,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 80% qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 19% are served by the Office of Special Education and 77% are students of color.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Teacher on Special Assignment will act as a liaison between assigned schools and the Special Education department. The teacher will collaborate with assigned schools to ensure compliance with the Part 200 Regulations and improve programming and instructional delivery for students with disabilities.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with assigned buildings to ensure timely completion of evaluations and reports to the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE).
  • Serve as a liaison with parents and guardians.
  • Maintain accurate class lists for assigned schools and programs.
  • Ensure IEP development in assigned schools is in accordance with NYSED mandates.
  • Inform and assist buildings with implementation of Part 200 Regulations.
  • Assist schools with designing and maintaining processes and procedures around the local CPSE.
  • Ensure all CPSE processed are in alignment with NYSED and Federal mandates and requirements.
  • Work with schools to schedule and coordinate CPSE meetings.
  • Provide professional development to schools around IEP development, use of IEP Direct program, etc.
  • Provide instructional coaching to Special Education teachers.
  • Update department administration as to the status of current initiatives in each building.
  • Works closely with Education Specialist to provide guidance and direction around Special Education compliance, programming, and supports for individual student.s
  • Work with Behavior Support Specialist to design behavior plans for individual students and classrooms.
  • Act as liaison with other educational facilities and agencies such as BOCES, day treatment, mental health agencies.
  • Address the needs of parents and provide guidance and support with respect to Special Education services.
  • Support District and Department initiatives.


EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • NYS Teacher Certification in Special Education
  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Special Education
  • Five years of successful teaching experience in Special Education, preferably in a PreK-12 public education setting
  • Specific experience in the interpretation and implementation of federal and state legislation and guidelines governing education and the IEP process
  • Documented experience and participation in the IEP process
  • Knowledge of current trends and research in Special Education
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word computer applications and IEP Direct
  • Ability to use effective public relations, interpersonal, organizational skills for the successful implementation of special education and related services
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • Training and or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Preference will be given to those internal candidates who have participated in the Syracuse Aspiring Leadership Academy (SALA).
  • Please note that New York State requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 for certification, and one hired, this proof will be kept on file in the Office of Human Resources.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to work up to 20 days during the Summer at the discretion of the Special Education Department


SALARY/SALARY RANGE:

  • The current starting salary for SCSD Teachers is $48,500. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
