A long-term substitute is needed for a Middle School Teacher on Assignment (TOA).

ROLE OF THE TEACHER ON ASSIGNMENT:

The Teacher on Assignment is a leadership role designed to provide exemplary teachers with an opportunity for professional growth; to learn, from practical experience, the skills as well as the needs relative to the transition from the classroom to administration. The Teacher on Assignment position enables the district to utilize the talents and enthusiasm of outstanding teachers as they assist in the administration of school programs in order to benefit student learning, growth, and safety.

The Teacher on Assignment program will promote internal leadership development by giving highly effective certified staff members the opportunity to:
  • Deepen and broaden relationships with students and support student growth through building programs and activities;Explore their motivation and interest in pursuing career development in administration;Extend beyond their graduate coursework or degree in administration through practical experiences;Develop and demonstrate their administrative talent to provide career options;Provide an excellent training program and practical experience for aspiring administrators.

Teachers on Assignment are certified staff members and as such are evaluated under District 34's Teacher Evaluation Plan. The professional teaching standards for all certified staff members in District 34 are set forth in Danielson's Framework for Teaching.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assume, under close supervision of the principal and/or assistant principal, responsibilities at the building and district level including but not limited to:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the social/emotional curriculum;Assist building leadership with daily discipline and student supervision;Assist with the creation and implementation of student lessons and interventions that increase student success in meeting the building's behavior expectations;Assist building leadership and staff in analyzing and using assessment data to develop instructional improvement plans to increase student achievement;Act as an additional resource person for teachers in regards to student and teaching issues by attending team meetings;Assist with the morning start and afternoon release procedures (e.g. student drop-offs and pick-ups)Meet and consult with individual teachers as needed/directed by the principal;Act in a supportive role with the building leadership to work with parents, teachers, and the community to promote the effective flow of communications;Assist with the planning and implementation of professional development at the building level;Participate in the screening, interviewing and selection process for non-certified staff members as assigned;Assist with supervision, evaluation, and assignment of non-certified staff;Act as liaison to the Transportation Coordinator and bus drivers;Supervise and oversee bus routes, including the coordination of routes requested by staff and approved by principal (i.e. field trips)Oversee and implement cafeteria/recess procedures and guidelines;Plan and organize assemblies and events;Participate in and assist with school and/or district-sponsored activities, after-school and evening, as identified by the principal;Support substitute teachers in carrying out their duties;Manage the building calendar;Assist with the implementation of standardized testing;Assume other duties as assigned by the principal.

DELIVERABLES:
  • Strong student relationships with adults help lead to decreased discipline concerns and increased safety within schools;Greater support to teachers and teams helps ensure the integrity and fidelity of implementation of school programs;Focused and proactive attention to the social/emotional curriculum will help limit teasing and bullying among students;Increased support to teachers and students increases the principal's ability to focus on his/her role of instructional leadership;A designated point person for school safety components (Overture/after school supervision, buses, lockers, drills, etc.) increases and encourages parent communication regarding concerns and questions;Additional administrative support will provide greater capacity to differentiate for student needs by personalizing interactions, responses, and interventions.

REPORTS TO: Middle School Principal

CERTIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certified teacher with a minimum of 5 years teaching experienceInterest and potential to fulfill the role of school administratorIllinois PEL required
    • Administrative endorsement or Type 75 certification preferred
    Collaborative, self-motivated, creative, energeticStrong communicator

TERM: This is full-time, long-term substitute position beginning January 2019 through April 2019.
