TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT
TOSAs are highly qualified professionals who have been identified as having high-level skills that fit the unique needs of a site or district-wide program outside of classroom instruction. TOSA opportunities provide exposure to unique program responsibilities and development that enhance an educator's career and focus on the effective instruction and acceleration of achievement MPS students.
The TOSA, General will work directly with teachers and building administration to provide leadership, support, assistance, and direction within the site or program that leads to accelerated academic achievement for MPS students.

The Ethnic Studies Instructional Specialist at Northeast Middle School will accomplish this through the following responsibilities:
  • Co-plan Ethnic Studies Curriculum with Ethnic Studies teacher. This person will bring expertise and extensive experience creating and teaching anti-racist curriculum, and develop a two-year sequence of curriculum for students in grades 7 and 8.
  • Co-Teach with Ethnic Studies teacher the curriculum that was written, in order to demonstrate and model effective teaching strategies to be used that are culturally relevant, and engage diverse learners.
  • Coach Ethnic Studies teacher to increase use of effective strategies
  • Work with Ethnic Studies teacher and administration to gather data on impact of Ethnic Studies work on student achievement and climate

The Ethnic Studies Instructional Specialist at Northeast Middle School will be successful in this role when:
  • A two-year anti-racist curriculum exists, that includes assessments, resources and instructional strategies
  • The Ethnic Studies teacher has increased their level of confidence and competence in writing, delivering and assessing effective Anti-Racist curriculum
  • Students who have engaged in the Ethnic Studies classes demonstrate an increase (as compared to their peers) in engagement with student leadership opportunities that foster social justice, positive school climate.

Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience in writing, implementing and evaluating anti-racist and culturally relevant curriculum
  • Experience in 1:1 coaching teachers to improve instructional practices
  • Extensive knowledge of social justice and anti-racist education practices and resources
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge in the field of anti-racist education

TOSA positions are 39-week assignments, which may have additional extended time.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
