Responsibilities:

Assure the ongoing success of the Corvallis High School Robotics team. Lead two assistant coaches, about a dozen adult volunteer mentors, and the team of about 40 students.

The coach needs to be with the team during most meetings and events. The team meets after school for 2 or 3 hours twice per week after school during most of the school year. The team meets 5 or 6 days a week for 3 to 8 hours during a 6-week “build season,” starting from the Saturday after the New Year. The team attends 2 to 5 competitions per year and 4 to 8 other events. Most competitions and some events require traveling as a team.

The goal of robotics is to teach students design, fabrication, electronics, programming business, and problem-solving. Robotics uses subjects taught in the classroom and gives students the opportunities to apply them in a hands-on and fun environment. Competition is used to allow students to see how their ideas and efforts compare with those of their peers and provide opportunity and incentive for creativity and improvement.

Fundraising and Budgeting – Robotics depends on fundraising, including grants, sponsorships, and donations to pay expenses. The head coach is responsible for creating and managing a financial plan.

Corvallis High School Robotics competes in the FIRST FRC robotics league. The team will attend two FRC local qualifiers each season and may go on to FRC district and world championships depending on team performance.

The specific role of the head coach is to organize the assistant coaches, mentors, and student leaders in assuring that all students on the team receive a positive learning experience, Important tasks include recruiting mentors and students, and finding the best roles for them that match their interests and skills and contribute to the success of the team. The Head coach must create and encourage a learning environment for students of all genders, races, and backgrounds, where every student has the opportunity to learn and contribute to their full potential. The head coach is ultimately responsible for assuring that all school district requirements and procedures for assuring student safety and well being are followed.

Candidates for this position should have demonstrated leadership and organizational skills in previous positions. Experience or education in Engineering, Manufacturing, Design, Business, or Education is preferred. Experience in leading youth organizations is preferred.
