Within WestEd, the Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) program offers a diverse portfolio of projects that promote quality science, mathematics, and technology education for all students. STEM projects advance research and professional development, increase public awareness and understanding about culture and language in the learning and teaching of mathematics, science, technology, engineering and explore the use of simulations and other technologies to support student learning. The STEM portfolio includes projects that develop curriculum and assessments, design and offer teacher professional development, as well as conduct and report on research on student and teacher learning.

Position Description
The STEM program at WestEd is seeking a Research Associate I to work on a range of educational research projects related to STEM and educational technology. The position will be responsible for working on all aspects of educational technology evaluations, including conducting classroom observations and interviews, recruiting and coordinating with study participants, managing and organize large databases, preparing documents for professional publications and presentations, and support field and lab-based research. Central to this role will be the ability to work with a broad range of individuals (e.g., researchers, study participants, school administrators), willingness to learn and take on new tasks, and the ability to adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

The position will work with Project Directors to develop and carry out pilot tests, evaluations, and larger-scale field tests, taking responsibility for quantitative and qualitative aspects of this work.

The position will be located in our Redwood City, CA Office.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the recruitment and support of research study participants, including serving as the primary liaison between WestEd research staff and study participants, communicating with study participants, and managing the distribution of materials to study participants.
  • Conduct classroom observations, cognitive labs ("think aloud" sessions), and teacher and student interviews as part of usability and feasibility studies on new educational technology resources.
  • Be responsible for collecting data from research instruments and for analysis, including qualitative coding of video and audio transcriptions, scoring of pre- and post-tests, data entry and data cleaning, and conducting basic analyses such as t-tests, correlations, regressions, ANOVA etc.
  • Assist with instrument development (e.g., surveys, observation tools, and rubrics).
  • Prepare IRB materials and applications for approval.
  • Carry out duties in a variety of educational settings, showing respect for and understanding of the roles of teachers and administrators.
  • Assist in the writing of project reports and proposals through researching, writing and editing, taking responsibility for particular sections.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in STEM, psychology, or related field.
  • Experience in the design, development, user testing, or evaluation of education products is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in school settings working with teachers and administrators. Teaching experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in Spanish reading and writing is a plus.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn to use new technology, including database software (Filemaker), mobile apps and operating systems (Apple iOS and Android), file-sharing tools, and cloud-based productivity tools.
  • Resourcefulness, careful attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and conducting interviews, observations and/or assessments.
  • Knowledge of human subjects regulations and IRB.
  • Experience in resource development and proposal preparation is desirable.
  • Experience in data collection, coding and analysis. Using statistical software such as SPSS , STATA, or R a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to prioritize work on multiple projects.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and a willingness to take on responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated patience, persistence, and ability to work as a team member.
  • High level of self-motivation and ability to work independently, when necessary.
