Title of Position: Education Associate, Elementary Language Arts/Literacy

Reports to: Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development

Description of Position:

The Education Associate for Elementary Language Arts/Literacy will provide leadership in the implementation of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and professional development in Language Arts and Literacy in grades K-12 with specific emphasis at the early and upper elementary school levels. The scope of work will require significant coordination and collaboration both within the Department of Education and with district and school personnel. This individual is a member of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development workgroup of the Department.

Major Responsibilities Include:
  • Coordinate state meetings and committee work to further the implementation of the Delaware State Standards for Language Arts and Literacy.
  • Work collaboratively with districts and charters and others to support standards-based Language Arts curriculum and instruction for all students.
  • Work collaboratively with the Delaware Literacy Coalition and Literacy Specialists/Cadre to design and deliver a coherent and comprehensive professional development program and Delaware State Standards aligned resources for K-12 English Language Arts teachers, specialists, and leaders.
  • Design, facilitate, and monitor statewide professional development, in a variety of contexts, and in collaboration with a variety of organizations to ensure implementation of English/Language Arts and Literacy standards.
  • Assist with state consortium efforts as a Language Arts/Literacy representative.
  • Collaborate across work groups on Language Arts and Literacy initiatives, including the implementation of the Delaware State Standards.
  • Develop and disseminate materials to support best practices in Language Arts curriculum, instruction, and professional development with a focus at the elementary school levels.
  • Serve as a representative of Delaware for national collaborative projects related to current job responsibilities.
  • Participate in the design and development of online modules and courses from inception to completion. This will require working within and across workgroups on the application of instructional design principles, learning theories, multimedia, and simulation technologies to support active professional learning.
  • Develop course storyboards, create formats for digital materials, implement course websites, and produce course design documents to support the work of professional learning initiatives.
  • Collaborate to build and support exemplary learning objects and modules along with associated educational materials.
  • Make recommendations for best practices in online education and identify content and technology resources for online teaching and learning.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Work Group Director or the Academic Support Associate Secretary.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a concentration in elementary reading and literacy across the content areas. Certification as a reading specialist preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching experience in K-12 schools English Language Arts or similar experience
  • Firm knowledge of national trends and the Delaware State Standards
  • Experience with elementary reading and writing instruction; especially K-2 foundational skills
  • Experience with literacy instruction across the content areas
  • Experience with designing and implementing multi-tiered systems of supports (MTSS) in an elementary system
  • Experience planning adult learning opportunities informed by the Professional Learning Standards
  • Experience integrating technology and digital tools into instruction for students and adult learners
  • Preferred experience with technical assistance to districts and charters
  • Preferred experience with coordination of teacher professional development programs

  • Knowledge and skills in utilizing technology and digital tools to enhance work productivity, presentations, and professional development with adult learners

Salary:

Salary will be computed in accordance with the education, experience, and training of the individual selected and in accordance with salary schedules for employees of the Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
