About the position
Whittle School & Studios is seeking an enthusiastic, self-starter multi-tasker for the position of Finance Director. This position will be located in Washington, DC, and is accountable for all finance functions from inception to full ramp up. These functions include, among other things: accounting operations; financial planning and analysis; Treasury cash management, AP/AR management; Tax planning and filing; and management of local third-party vendors.
This individual, Finance Director, will report to the CFO of Whittle School and Studios and to the COO of the Washington, DC campus.

Whittle School & Studios is seeking an enthusiastic, self-starter multi-tasker for the position of Finance Director. This position will be located in Washington, DC, and is accountable for all finance functions from inception to full ramp up. These functions include, among other things: accounting operations; financial planning and analysis; Treasury cash management, AP/AR management; Tax planning and filing; and management of local third-party vendors.
This individual, Finance Director, will report to the CFO of Whittle School and Studios and to the COO of the Washington, DC campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Management
- Support the build-out of a well-designed financial ERP system and campus billing system by providing local market requirement inputs and assistance in local implementation
- Develop and maintain a documented system of sound campus accounting policies and strong control procedures
- Serve as strong business partner to the school leadership team by providing critical financial information, operating metrics and in-depth analysis for results, budget/forecasts, business initiatives and local contract negotiations.
- Recruit and build the campus finance team, oversee the department's operations.
- Oversee local procurement together with the COO
- Manage third party vendors where needed
- Manage campus working capital and cash flow cycles:
- Ensure AP/AR are processed in a timely manner;
- Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
- Maintain the chart of accounts together with HQ
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system and adequate accounting records
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
- Support CFO/campus COO and collaborate with local enrollment team for setting tuition and fee policy, managing billing and collection; assist with parent communications where needed
- Produce timely management accounting and legal entity financial reports
- Prepare campus financial and management review package
- Track campus financial and operating metrics
- Provide management cost reports
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
- Collaborate with campus COO and leadership team as well as HQ Finance to build and manage annual budget and rolling forecasts
- Support business partners by providing financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments and contract negotiations
- Coordinate the provision of information to internal audit from HQ and any external auditor
- Comply with any local statutory reporting requirements and tax filings
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration (or equivalent business experience);graduate degree preferred.
- Solid knowledge of US GAAP. Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations preferred.
- Experienced and skillful with financial ERP systems and reporting software/tools
- Prior experience in big four public accounting firms or reputable large local firms preferred.
- Prior experience in managing independent school financials a strong plus, though not required.
- Experience building financial system and/or working in start-up environment a plus
- Demonstrated hands-on approach and success in working in a team-based environment
- Ability to work under pressure with fast pace; flexibility with work hours expected
- Experience managing a team and ability to motivate, delegate to and empower staff desirable
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills
