REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Welcome Services

OVERVIEW:
Boston Public Schools seeks a Director of Welcome Centers to assist in the leadership and management of the Welcome Services department. The Welcome Centers are charged with being a hub of information, recruitment and system access for current, incoming, and prospective Boston Public School families, with an ultimate goal of ensuring that all families who wish to be enrolled in the Boston Public Schools are successfully registered to do so. The Director will manage and operate the designated location and supervise staff committed to engaging with families and the community to implement school registration, and to support the successful transition of students into our schools through outreach, education, and advocacy.
The Director will partner internally with colleagues in other Welcome Center locations and across the Office of Engagement. The Director will also collaborate with staff in relevant district departments (e.g. Special Education, English Language Learning, Information and Technology, Communications and more) and schools to ensure consistent and high quality messaging about programs and services available to students and families. The Director will also be part of a team effort to enhance the capacity of school staff and parent leaders to aid in their own outreach efforts and to disseminate school choice and registration information to families.
The role of the Director may expand as the work of engaging families and the community evolves in new and entrepreneurial ways that further integrate all the stakeholders of the Boston Public Schools.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Hire, supervise, train, and develop full-time, part-time and seasonal staff with a focus on teamwork, standardization, information accuracy and quality customer service;
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for providing services to families;
  • Manage relationships with assignment specialists with regard to building a communication pipeline for assignment related issues;
  • Implement the school choice and registration process in their assigned center(s) including staff oversight;
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the welcome center and implement staff development to strengthen and diversify staff capacity and skills;
  • Evaluate site impact and staff performance;
  • Lead efforts in a designated Welcome Center to build, record and share a list of available resources inside and outside the school system that support parents in their search for quality educational options;
  • Develop collaborative relationships with community organizations and other networks that connect with community residents;
  • Facilitate among Welcome Center staff direct contact with principals and headmasters in their area in order to develop a deep knowledge of their schools and their programs and initiatives;
  • Participate in the department's director level meetings, full staff meetings, cross-department meetings, and other meetings as required;
  • Lead or participate in projects that contribute to continuous improvement efforts;
  • Work collaboratively as a team member with fellow Center Directors, peer level directors for other programs within the Office of Engagement, and the Senior Director;
  • Maintain meticulously detailed records of people and issues addressed in the Welcome Center;
  • Provide periodic reports on the work of the Welcome Center
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in business related field,
  • Ability to deliver and evaluate quality customer service
  • Three years of supervisory experience or the have ability to demonstrated high-level management and leadership skill set
  • Strong background and experience in leading and/or effectively managing an educational, parent, community, and/or other similar organization focused on customer service
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with a variety of organizations, parents, community and religious leaders, advocates, teachers, principals, and others
  • Ability to create and maintain strong community collaborations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to train, supervise, schedule and evaluate staff from different cultural backgrounds and skill sets
  • Deep understanding of and empathy for issues facing urban families
  • Ability to manage multiple constituencies
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

QUALIFICATIONS-PREFERRED:
  • Master's Degree
  • Second Language Proficiency in (Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Kreyol, Chinese (Mandarin), Vietnamese, Cape Verdean Creole, Portuguese or Somali)
  • Ability to work effectively with second language constituents
  • Experience leading an organization through a change process
  • Knowledge of special education and or English language learner issues, policies and regulations
  • Experience engaging parents, families, and community members in educational, parent, community, and/or other similar organization effectively
TERMS: Managerial, 12 months, Tier D. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement. This position requires flexible schedule that will include some evenings and Saturdays.
