Primary Purpose
The librarian provides access to materials in all formats; instruction to stimulate interest in reading,
viewing and using information; works with other educators to meet students needs
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science (preferred) from an accredited college or
university
A Texas Librarian or Learning Resources Certificate
Successfully complete a school librarian preparation program
Experience
Two school years of classroom teaching experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties
1. Supervises library operations during scheduled hours.
2. Meets and plans with teacher teams to coordinate resource center materials with the instructional
program.
3. Instructs and assists students and teachers with information access techniques for CD-ROM products,
on-line catalogs, databases, and the Internet.
4. Serves as a resource person in the acquisition and use of technology.
5. Selects, evaluates, and acquires materials in all formats and encourages input from teachers,
administrators, and students in the selection of appropriate materials.
6. Processes and organizes materials as quickly as possible to provide access to those materials, for
teachers and students.
7. Keeps staff and patrons informed of acquisition of new materials.
8. Complies with all accreditation standards for school library services.
9. Provides instruction to teachers on the use of library resources, materials, audio-visual equipment,
technology and specialized information access.
10. Inventories materials, equipment, and supplies.
11. Continually updates the collection by removing materials that are obsolete or inappropriate to the
campus population.
12. Keeps accurate records and statistics of current activities, circulation, patron usage, and budget
expenditures.
13. Prepares administrative reports of library operations.
14. Maintains long-term goals and plans to maximize student development.
15. Assigns duties, trains, and supervises the work of student aides, clerical assistants, and volunteers in
the library.
16. Stays current with facility appropriateness and maintains an attractive, organized atmosphere,
conducive to learning and research, as well as recreational reading.
17. Maintains an accountability system for patrons.
18. Helps to develop and implement proposals for additional projects and programs that increase
resources.
19. Assists with independent study and in the selection, use and location of materials.
20. Keeps informed of and comply with all state and district public education regulations and policies
concerning school libraries.
21. Performs other duties as assigned by the administrative supervisor.
