Job Summary
Oversees the implementation of the programmatic activities for Communications. Oversees the program operations and assures that the programmatic operations are in compliance with the grant, operating budget.
Essential Functions
  • Handles press inquiries and keeps the Deputy Chief of Communications and the Senior Communications Officer informed to ensure that inquiries are answered promptly.
  • Coordinates press details for events including the audiovisual, layout of press events, podium and podium sign awards and big checks.
  • Writes the first paragraph and defines the issue in briefing memos.
  • Monitors and reviews the news clips through the clip vendor; ensures that the vendor is providing the services which were contracted; works with the Communications Specialist to ensure that positive articles are showcased on social media; works with the Deputy Chief to ensure that negative articles are excluded from the clips.
  • Drafts and updates the calendar of annual press events and one-time events; ensures that logistics and talking points are taken care of in a timely manner.
  • Suggests ideas for press events and media stories and brainstorms to assist with filling the press calendar with new and innovative ideas.
  • Updates media contacts, including community news outlets; serves as the key Communications contact for planning events when events interface with other offices; performs other press duties and provides assistance to Government Relations as needed.
  • Assists with coordinating work projects for interns and others working with the office on a short term basis.
  • Assists with monitoring the financial processes and contractual services in the Office of External Relations; trains staff on office operations.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of full-time, paid, professional experience in public relations, community relations, event management, event consulting or education.
OR
  • Any combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Talent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • the principles and current practices in the press management of multiple entities..
  • the methods and techniques utilized in news dissemination and identifying positive and negative news.
  • organizing press events, adhering to timelines and teamwork.
  • the principles of research.
  • the structure for briefing memos.

Demonstrated ability to :
  • present ideas to others internal and .external to the School District.
  • write and edit event briefings efficiently for annual and standing events.
  • use a personal computer for word processing and data management.
  • train others on news dissemination and identifying positive and negative news.
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • establish and maintain effective relationships.

Additional Job Information: This is a non-represented position. The salary grade for this role is 4023. Interviews may be conducted to determine how well a candidate meets the established criteria. Please note that not all qualified candidates may be selected for an interview.
