Director of Finance & Administration

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance & Administration contributes to the overall success of the organization by effectively managing all financial and administrative functions. Reporting directly to the COO, the Director of Finance & Administration will provide direction, hands-on management, and continual improvement of day-to-day financial operations and administration systems.

Responsibilities will extend to New Visions for Public Schools (“NVPS”) and our ten affiliated charter schools. The Director of Finance & Administration will work closely with New Visions senior staff and program directors, as well as charter school leadership. Work with members of Finance will focus on overall management of the unit, approval of transactions and oversight of accounting closes, as well as budgeting, financial management and reporting. Management of Administration will ensure a smoothly running office environment.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Accounting
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the accounting team to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions for NVPS and charter schools.
  • Manage financial closings for month, quarter and year-end. Approve transactions prepared by staff accountants.
  • Oversee annual audits, regulatory, compliance, and tax filings.
  • Analyze monthly and annual financial statements to confirm completeness of closings, identify trends, exceptions, etc.
  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds when needed.
  • Continually assess, improve and document general accounting, accounts receivable, cash receipts, accounts payable, and cash disbursement controls and procedures.

Budgeting and Financial Management
  • Support the Budget Manager in the annual budget process for all NVPS programs and charter schools
  • Ensure availability and accuracy of monthly financial information to ensure timely financials, reports and other information to support the operations and business plans of each NVPS program and charter school
  • Support NVPS’s Development Unit in preparation of budgets and reports to funders
  • Support the administration of NVPS’s grant programs including, the application, award and monitoring functions

Office Administration
  • Support the administrative function of the organization including reception, property/facility management, and furnishings and equipment
  • Oversee the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments
  • Support in the planning of organization events.

Education and Experience:
  • MBA, CPA or other advanced degree required.
  • Minimum 10 years of financial experience.
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector preferred.
  • Strong technical skills. Experience with Abila/MIP general ledger a plus.

Required Skill Set and Knowledge Base:
  • Excellent management skills, plus strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Initiative and proven ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
