    Director of Continuing Education
    (261 Day Position)

    Position Goal - The Director of Continuing Education is responsible for developing, staffing, and implementing a robust year-round schedule of afterschool and evening enrichment programs for students in grades K through 12 and adult learners of all ages. She/he is further responsible for maintaining the finances of Continuing Education, a self-sufficient program, under the direction and supervision of the Chief Financial Officer of the Westport Public Schools.

    Reports To: Chief Financial Officer – Westport Public Schools

    Salary: $75,000 - $85,000 depending on experience and qualifications

    Programming & Staffing
    Year-round
    • Monitor performance of all existing Continuing Education Adult and Kids' Division programs, daily, weekly, and seasonally.
    • Regularly assess Continuing Education website data, including registration trends by individual programs across schools, age ranges, and categories, to determine if offerings should be sustained, restructured, or discontinued.
    • Collaborate with catalog manager (staff) to maintain a balanced slate of program offerings each season; schedule and assign room and/or locations for all programs, classes, workshops, and camps.
    • Evaluate commercial and financial viability of new program proposals, strategic program partnerships (with, for example, local businesses), and existing program innovations based upon community interests, needs, and trends.
    • Recruit, interview, hire, and maintain high quality staff for all programs; and
      • Staff may be internal (WPS teachers, administrators, etc.) or external;
      • WPS Human Resources Department assists with external recruitment efforts.
    • Establish and maintain regular communication with PTAs and other school and community organizations to solicit and conceptualize ideas for new programs.
    • Conduct regular observations of programs in operation and take appropriate action to improve and maintain performance of staff and satisfaction of all stakeholders.
    Summer
    • Hire and supervise (co)directors for Discovery Camp and Sports & Fun Camp:
      • Discovery Camp and Sports & Fun Camp are, respectively, a traditional day camp and a sports/fitness day camp run by Continuing Education for 6 weeks each summer.
    • Collaborate with Discovery Camp and Sports & Fun Camp (co)directors to develop, staff, and implement each camp, with special attention to programming, including innovative activities and camp electives, weekly schedules, and supplies as necessary.
    • Set rates of pay for summer employees (hourly workers) and independent contractors, in consultation with the business administrator.
    • Set camp fees, with an emphasis on affordability, accessibility, and market competitiveness.
    • Coordinate with WPS Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and Extended Year School (ESY) program managers to accommodate ESY students receiving services at any and all Continuing Education summer programs.
    • Work with academic department coordinators and director of guidance to maintain, modify as necessary, staff, and administer all summer for-credit academic courses.
    Marketing & Communication / Graphic Design
    • Write, edit/copy edit/proof, design (or redesign), layout, and format three ~40-page catalogs each year: Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer.
    • Oversee printing of catalog, including managing and adhering to production schedules, negotiating printing prices with attention to attendant USPS mail regulations and requirements.
    • Oversee maintenance and regular, seasonal update of the Continuing Education website.
    • Devise effective strategies for identifying and reaching new markets through the creation and design of tailored marketing campaigns.
    • Develop, write, edit, and design all print and digital marketing materials, including flyers, posters, email ads (via Constant Contact or other email marketing platform), social media posts, website content, etc.
    • Launch and manage Westport Continuing Education across relevant and effective social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
    Program Administration / Finances
    • Establish and maintain a collaborative work environment that leverages the talents and strengths of staff and provides appropriate autonomy to be productive at the highest levels.
    • Set rates of pay for employee-instructors (hourly workers) and independent contractor-instructors, in consultation with the business administrator.
    • Set program fees (class tuitions) through an established protocol, with an emphasis on affordability, accessibility, and market competitiveness.
    • Supervise daily assessment of class viability (run/cancel), manage waitlists, negotiate and/or approve adjustments to class minimums and maximums and instructor pay rates.
    • Ensure that all policies and regulations of the Board of Education are observed throughout the Continuing Education program.
    • Oversee weekly, and yearly tasks and responsibilities necessary to maintain the efficient functioning of the Continuing Education office, including recordkeeping and updating/maintaining SchoolDude (facilities) event schedules for district schools.
    • Present the aims of the Continuing Education program to the Board of Education when requested by the Superintendent or designee.
    • Prepare a balanced fiscal year budget that recognizes Continuing Education's self-sufficiency requirement.
    • Approve biweekly payrolls.
    • Approve expenditures and purchase orders.
    • Maintain appropriate inventory controls.
    • Review and approve, as appropriate, requests for materials and services.
