Special Education School Improvement Specialist

The Yonkers Public Schools, a multicultural, urban school district of 27,000 students in southern Westchester County, seeks a Special Education School Improvement Specialist (SESIS), to work in their Pupil Support Services/Special Education Department.  The following is the details of this position:

Role Description:   This teacher will work with identified schools within the Yonkers Schools District to improve outcomes for students with disabilities through the Quality Improvement Process Plan (QIP) or successor process/plan as required by NYSED; i.e.

  • Assist with an analysis of data and review of instructional practices.
  • Assist district personnel with the writing of a program improvement plan.
  • Provide high quality, professional development and technical assistance to implement the Quality Improvement Process Plan.
  • Assist in assuring systems of progress monitoring are established and progress related to QIP is documented.
  • Participate in statewide VESID workgroups as established by VESID, including workgroups to develop, review and revise Quality Indicator and Resource Guides identifying research-based best practices.
  • Liaison with schools in order to develop and provide training to meet their needs.
  • Travel required to participate in required Albany training sessions and meetings.

Certification:  NYS Certified Teacher - Special Education (K-12), or Students with Disabilities 1-6

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years experience in teaching in special education
  • Experience conducting trainings and workshops for teachers and parents
  • Knowledge of NYS/Yonkers Standards, curriculum and assessment (K-12), PBIS and RTI
  • CSE experience and IEP development
  • Available to work beyond the school day/year
  • Willingness to participate in training beyond the school day/year at times mutually agreed upon
  • Familiar with Part 200 NYS Commissioner’s Regulations and Reauthorization of IDEA
