Summary: The physical education teacher will provide maximum physical activity time within the class period, teach skills and activities that transfer into physical activity outside of physical education class, motivate children to be physically active, and take the role of physical activity and health director for the school. The physical education teacher also has the responsibility to help direct and guide opportunities for physical activity within the school outside the physical education class providing specific academic support to students and classroom teachers during thematic interdisciplinary investigations.

Responsibilities :
  • Create an inviting, exciting, and safe learning environment that effectively organizes space, equipment, and students.
  • Ensure that there is adequate equipment available that allows all children to be active at the same time (e.g., one ball per child), and plan practice opportunities that are structured for maximum participation for all students.
  • Encourage and motivate children to be active, by teaching skills, promoting community activities, and leading by example.
  • Develop and coordinate a school wellness plan and committee to promote healthy and active lifestyles.
  • Plan and coordinate school wide activities such as field day, fun runs, a walking program, and morning exercise breaks.
  • Plan before- and after-school clubs, including daily recess for activities such as jump rope, walking, dance, gymnastics, and intramural sports.
  • Identify and collaborate with community-based organizations that promote physical activity, such as organized recreational sports, dance classes, gymnastics programs, and martial arts among others to provide information to students and parents. Plan and implement instructional units which adhere to the New York State standards and the curriculum, mission and vision of the Charter School of Inquiry.
  • Collaborate with community based organizations and classroom teachers and coaches to infuse African and African-American history and culture into the physical education program.


  • Attend and participate in all professional development for instructional personnel including but not limited to professional development in the responsive classroom approach, literacy and inquiry-based instruction and African American culture infusion,
  • Assess and evaluate student progress.
  • Utilize formal and informal assessments to plan instructional program. Work with Literacy and Inquiry Coaches to review student assessment data and create differentiated individual instruction plans for each student.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to meet program requirements of the Charter School of Inquiry, including infusion of literacy and inquiry learning into physical education and health.
  • Maintain open communication with parents, including monthly phone calls to each student's parents or guardian.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning by following the responsive classroom and cooperative discipline models.
  • Perform other instructional duties, as deemed appropriate by the Head of School.
  • Adhere to all dress standards and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Valid New York State Teaching Certificate and/or NCLB "highly qualified" status
Teachers who are not certified must meet one or more of the criteria listed in section 2854(3) (a-1) of Education Law
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills; maintaining open communication and relating sensitively to others
