QUALIFICATIONS:
Completed at least 60 credit hours at a post-secondary college, or have associate or higher degree, or
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment in the following areas: Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate. The State Board of Education approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge: Basic Skills Examination • A passing score on the score Basic Skills Test MTTC • A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam • Other basic skills examination options ETS Parapro Assessment • A passing score of 460 is required (revised 10/4/2017).
RANGE OF PAY: Current Contract Rate
NOTE: Position required the ability and demonstrated success and/or ability to implement behavior plans.
Position summary:
Under general supervision to assist in conducting intensified learning experiences for students in assigned areas of study; to perform a variety of record keeping and supportive tasks for instructional personnel, and to perform related work as required.
Examples of Duties
• Assist in executing the goal of the I.E.P.
• Understand differences between goals, plans and I.E.P.'s.
• Assist instructional personnel with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
• Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow-up learning activity.
• Oversee and supervise students in classroom activities, in the library, and on field trips.
• Assist in the development of a variety of instructional materials.
• Perform a variety of regular record-keeping duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials.
- Assists students in getting to various locations within the building.
• Maintain student records, attendance, and files.
• Operate a variety of instructional media, office machines, and equipment.
• Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher and may help assist /communicate specific student needs to the substitute when necessary.
Assists students with understanding classroom oral or written instructions
Help students improve social interactions with other students/adults.
Assists students with organizational skills, i.e., assignments, homework, organizing work to be completed, prioritizing and completing classroom assignments.
Monitor and report student(s) progress with academic tasks, behavior/social skills, and share information that may be impacting a student"s performance (both positive and negative.
• Other support person duties as assigned by the supervisor which may be to assist in an emergency only with duties ordinarily assigned other bargaining unit personnel.
Qualifications Guide
Knowledge of:
• General concepts of child growth and development and autistic child behavior characteristics.
• Techniques used in controlling and motivating students with physical and learning disabilities.
• English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
• Consistent routine record-keeping.
• General purposes and goals of public education.
• Specific subject area content as required in job assignment.
Ability to:
• Assume responsibility for supervising students.
• Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings.
• Perform routine record-keeping and basic arithmetical calculations.
• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward students.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public.
