Boston Public Schools seeks a Program Director for Computer Science

OVERVIEW:
The Office of Instructional & Information Technology's (OIIT) mission is to provide the technology foundation, vision, leadership, and support for the members of the Boston Public Schools community in the use of technology. We support technology use and integration to achieve the district's academic and operational goals to increase student performance and to close the achievement gap.

Program Director for Computer Science will support the implementation of school-specific and district-wide computer science programs, pilots and initiatives with the overarching objective of ensuring equitable access to high-quality computer science education for all students, particularly those who are underrepresented in technology-related career fields and higher education programs.
He/she will collaborate and manage relationships with teachers and school administration as well as local organizations including non-profits, businesses, and higher-ed institutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Contribute to the strategic planning and decision-making processes for Computer Science Education in BPS and in individual schools.
  • Facilitate and/or coordinate teacher professional development to support the implementation of Computer Science and related programs in BPS schools.
  • Organize and/or facilitate events relating to the promotion of Computer Science for BPS students and families.
  • Foster and manage relationships with other computer science education partner organizations, both nonprofit and industry organizations.
  • Manages the documentation and dissemination of best practices.
  • Support team members in other district-wide technology initiatives and trainings.
QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED:


  • A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in computer science or a technology-related engineering degree, or a Masters degree in Education with Computer Science teaching experience.
  • Experience in academic program development in K-12 computer science education.
  • Experience in working in or collaborating with urban school districts.
  • Knowledge of relevant CS and STEM standards including (but not limited to) Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards, ISTE Standards for Students, CSTA standards.
QUALIFICATIONS-PREFERRED:


  • Flexible, collaborative attitude needed to effectively function in a fast-paced and highly-changeable environment.
  • Effective and impactful presentation skills able to address audiences which are both small and large in size.
  • Familiarity with K-12 Computer Science curriculums such as Code.org, Exploring Computer Science, AP CS, and Project Lead The Way.
  • Familiarity with computer science tools used in K-12 education, such as Scratch.
  • Experience working with various hardware related to Computer Science education such as: Arduino, LEGO Mindstorms, micro:bit, Makey Makey, Sphero, etc.
  • Fluency in at least one programming language.
  • Strong growth mindset to learn new technology tools as they evolve.
  • Excellent and effective communication skills, including proficiency with both the Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
TERMS: Managerial, Tier C. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.
