Job Description / Essential Elements:

ELK GROVE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: PHYSICAL THERAPIST

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned Director, provide appropriate services to assist students with conditions that are physically disabling to provide access to curriculum in their educational setting; provide training and consultation to staff and parents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist with the development and delivery of in-service training or team teaching school-wide / classroom- wide programs, on curricula or environmental modifications as an approach to Response to Intervention and Instruction.

Contribute to team-based problem solving by assisting with the provision of pre-referral services to support a child's learning and behavior in the least restrictive environment.

Participate in progress monitoring; assist with gathering and analysis of data related to Response to Intervention strategies.

Complete the educationally related PT assessment, which includes child observation, record review, interview, performance-based, and standardized/non-standardized testing procedures in the areas of suspected disability according to specified timelines. Consider parent concerns, and any possible effects of cultural or language differences.

Identify barriers to learning, participation, and independent functioning. Consider the effect of any existing special education supports and services which are being utilized to improve performance.

Review PT assessment findings and/or progress at IEP meetings. Interpret and link findings and progress as it relates to a child's performance in behavior and developmental or functional abilities.

Collaborate with the IEP team to develop goals/objectives which support the students access to curriculum and implementation such that the IEP team provides integrated services.

Develop a therapy intervention plan that supports the IEP goals/objectives and is based on peer-reviewed research.

Develop a therapy intervention plan which includes a continuum of services including integrated classroom activities, group and individual interventions, and home programs as appropriate in meeting the child's needs in the least restrictive educational environment. Implement the plan in the appropriate setting and curricula, modify as indicated to attain goals. Recommend termination of service when benefit has been achieved.

Consult and train educational personnel, family members, or other professionals involved with the child in order to implement activities, strategies or adapted equipment for use in the child's routine.

Document progress, findings, actions taken, and/or recommendations as required by special education processes and professional standards.

Identify and evaluate adaptive equipment to assist student in self care and academic activities.

Assist in developing transition plans for student moving to other environments.

Work cooperatively with personnel from other agencies providing services to the student or family.

Participate in professional growth activities in special education and in pediatric physical therapy.

Perform related duties as assigned.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Child growth and development.

Common disabling conditions of children.

Theory and practice of physical therapy as it applies to infants, children and youth.

Methods, techniques and procedures for lifting and moving children and youth.

Strategies and methodologies in educational settings.

Special education law relative to physical therapy services.

Recordkeeping and report preparation techniques.

Principles of supervision and training.

Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Oral and written communication skills.

Operation of a computer and assigned software.

ABILITY TO:

Administer appropriate assessments.

Interpret history and assessment data.

Design and implement appropriate intervention strategies.

Interpret, apply and explain applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Continuously perform physically demanding tasks requiring a typical strength of floor and arm lifting a

minimum of 50-lbs. each.

Perform special handling of physically disabled children and youth requiring strength, flexibility

and agility such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying at varying levels.

Train and supervise the performance of assigned personnel.

Attend workshops and conferences to enhance base knowledge of pediatric physical therapy.

Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records, files and reports.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Work confidentially with discretion.

Plan and organize work.

Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.

Hear and speak to exchange information in person or on the telephone.

See to read a variety of materials.

Move hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university .

Two years experience in physical therapy with a primary focus on pediatric clients.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver's license.

Valid California License to practice Physical Therapy

Personal transportation for job-related travel.
