Job Summary
Installs, inspects, certifies, maintains, and repairs sprinkler systems on School District properties. Ensures the operation of all sprinkler alarm systems in accordance with industry standards and codes as well as local and state regulations.
Essential Functions
  • Installs fire suppression systems and equipment; reads and follows blueprints of layouts and building plans; ensures that all systems are set up in adherence to applicable code and regulations governing their installation and operation as well as according to manufacturers' guidelines.
  • Inspects all sprinkler systems to determine compliance with City code requirements and standards; performs annual sprinkler systems certification activities as required by the City of Philadelphia; provides valid National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification number on all City Sprinkler/Standpipe Systems Inspection and Certification documents.
  • Identifies, evaluates and troubleshoots all sprinkler, standpipe and fire pump system problems; uses electronic inspection and diagnostic equipment to determine causes of system difficulties; makes necessary repairs to manual and sprinkler systems.
  • Tests and installs backflow devices; performs water pressure test, test for water leaks and monitor control devices to ensure proper function.
  • Prepares and maintains records and documentation of all repairs and certification, including inspection reports, and detailed maintenance.
  • Stays abreast of current developments and trends within the industry.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of full-time, paid, journeyman level experience installing, repairing and certifying fire suppression systems and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • standard practices and methods for routine and preventative maintenance of fire sprinkler systems.
    • installation requirements for new fire sprinkler systems.
    • the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 25 and the codes pertaining to fire sprinkler systems.
    • occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with sprinkler systems installations, repairs and certification activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, points list mapping documents and specifications.
    • maintain accurate and up to date documentation of all systems.
    • effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
    • establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses
  • Valid license as a Fire Suppression Systems Worker in the City of Philadelphia.

  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.


Salary: To: 64003.00

Additional factors including the ability to follow directions, punctuality and professional conduct will be considered in part of the evaluation process. The selected candidate must have no anecdotal record on file and have not been subject to any disciplinary action within the past eighteen (18) months, and have an excellent record of attendance and punctuality during the last three (3) years (defined as no more than eighteen (18) occasions of lateness or absence for personal illness in the last three years (3) years with the exception of one extended long-term absence.
