Job Summary:

Utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, School Counselors promote student success, provide preventative services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic, career and personal/social development for all students

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Development and Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program
    • Develops and maintains a written ASCA aligned plan for effective delivery of the comprehensive school counseling programDevelops and maintains a written plan for activities, programs and services for each of the NOSCA 8 Components of College and Career Readiness (5 components for elementary program)Communicates the plan and goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to stakeholders (e.g. school governance board, LSAC, PTA, administrators, teachers, parents and community/business leaders)Spends approximately 80% of time providing direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning and Preventive/Responsive Services and approximately 20% of time in program management, system support and accountabilityMaintains current and appropriate resources and effectively communicates to stakeholder groups (i.e. school and community based resources)Uses all available data (e.g. formative, summative, testing/assessment, standardized) to develop programs and services that meet students' needs
    Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program
    • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities that meets students' needsIncorporates into counseling program life skills that students need to have in order to be successful in the 21 st centuryProvides comprehensive college and career guidance and ensures compliance with all Bridge Law and CCRPI requirementsAssists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plansInterprets and utilizes student data accurately and appropriatelyCollaborates and communicates with parents, guardians and teachers in the development of educational, career and life plansDevelops and implements an appropriate student referral process and follow-up process as neededProvides individual and group counseling to students with social and emotional needsImplements school wide prevention/intervention programs to support the emotional, social and behavioral needs of studentsAssists teachers, parents/guardians and students and others in interpreting and understanding student dataUtilizes all available technology resources effectively, including Student Information System, in the implementation and monitoring of comprehensive school counseling program
    Accountability
    • Conducts annual program review to evaluate extent of program implementation and effectivenessMeasures results of comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results with Principal and other relevant stakeholders, as appropriateMonitors academic performance and other relevant performance data (e.g. behavior, attendance, etc.) and utilizes data to provide appropriate interventions for students in needEnsures students are appropriately advised and registered for courses in order to meet on track (4 year) graduation requirements, career cluster/pathways, college entrance/access and other post-secondary goalsCollaborates with Graduation Coach and other support personnel to ensure students receive appropriate remediation, test prep, content recovery, credit recovery and other supports to attain on track graduationAccurately reviews and appropriately maintains student records related to counseling and advisement (e.g. evaluation of student transcripts, confidential student information)
    Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skillsPromotes positive relationship with students, parents, school staff, and communityCommunicates effectively and often with parents about program, activities, and services to support academic, college/career and personal goals of studentsUtilizes technology and effective communication tools (email/newsletter, website, school messenger, social media, parent nights, etc.), as appropriate, to inform students, parents and other relevant stakeholder groups about programs, interventions, activities and supportsPerforms other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Education and Experience
Education:

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling required

Experience:
  • Two (2) years of experience in counseling students as individuals and in groups preferredExperience interpreting standardized testing results preferred

Certification/Licensure:
  • Must hold or be eligible for S-5 certification in school counseling; S-6 or S-7 preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate a guidance and counseling program based on student needsProven skill in counseling/advising individuals and groupsAbility to convey accurate information regarding academic and career guidanceAbility to consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the needs of studentsKnowledge of available school, system and community resourcesAwareness of cultural diversity and its implications for school counselingMust be able to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilitiesAbility to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issuesMust be able to collaborate effectively with District personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groups of peopleAbility to work collaboratively and cooperatively as a member of a team and in a professional mannerKnowledge of current counseling practices across the academic, career and personal/social domainsKnowledge of current career and college entrance requirementsExcellent communication skills both written and verbal.

Salary Information:
Salary Range for 2018-2019

Elementary and Middle School:
  • $53,709 - $63,387

High School:
  • $55,052 - $64,973

Step placement credit may be granted for up to a maximum of 8 years (Step 9) of prior verifiable experience. Salary placement with Fulton County Schools is non-negotiable

For Elementary and Middle School - . Actual salary placement will be based on Fulton County Board of Education experience calculations from the Non-Teaching Salary Schedule B-200, Executive Scale, Step 1 - Step 9

For High School - . Actual salary placement will be based on Fulton County Board of Education experience calculations from the Non-Teaching Salary Schedule B-205, Executive Scale, Step 1 - Step 9
