Job Description / Essential Elements:

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR – NON SEVERE

DEFINITION:

Works under the direction and supervision of teachers assigned to various special education programs as defined by Master Plan for Special Education regulations (i.e. Resource Specialists, Special Day class Teachers, Designated Instructional Service Teachers and psychologists) and provides special activities to students with identified learning problems (as per Master Plan criteria) in individual or small group settings in either an in-class or pull-out setting.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• To assist special education personnel in implementing the individual educational plans (IEP's) for students as developed by the IEP Team and the special education teacher

• To work with special programs as requested; to assist in providing guidance to children in a variety of activities

• Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (GED).

• Associate in Arts Degree or 48 semester units (NCLB)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Special needs of children with learning problems;

• General needs and behavior of children;

• Special Education Programs;

• Direct instructional programs; and

• General clerical methods and procedures.

Ability to:

• Speak and write Spanish;

• Relate to students with learning disabilities;

• Supervise a group or an individual child in various learning activities;

• Understand and carry out oral and written directions in English;

• Implement instructional activities as directed;

• Maintain cooperative relationships with people contacted during the course of work;

• Perform a wide variety of duties which will enhance the instruction of the special education program;

• Plan materials independently for reinforcing desired learning skills; and

• Maintain confidentiality regarding students and school records.

SUPERVISION:

Works under the supervision of Administrative Personnel.
