Job Summary
The Alternative Site Cafeteria Manager performs daily tasks to ensure meals are prepared on schedule and according to food safety guidelines. This position prepares and serves two types of food service, namely elementary pre-plate and secondary open food service. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.Two years of responsible experience in a large scale food service operation including food preparation, proper food handling, and food safety and sanitation.One year of supervisory experience, to include planning and directing employees' daily work schedule and tasks.Ability to work and make decisions independently and carry out duties from various forms of instruction.Ability to provide training in all kitchen responsibilities.Proficiency in and experience working with Microsoft Office, cashiering, basic record keeping, and preparation of written reports.Ability to order supplies, organize work in the cafeteria and kitchen areas, assure daily cash receipts are properly balanced and transmitted, and maintain accurate records.Knowledge of the methods, practices, laws and regulations relating to proper heating and serving of foods in large quantities.Knowledge of and ability to articulate Anchorage School District food service policies and procedures.Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with a broad diversity of students, staff, other Anchorage School District personnel, and the public.Must be proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.Must either have or obtain a current Anchorage Municipality Food Worker's Card within 15 calendar days of hire, or within the past three years have competed the four hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety class.Must attend the eight hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety class and pass the associated exam within the first 60 calendar days of employment.

The following are preferred:
  1. Experience working with food service point of sale and inventory management systems.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Responsible for management of all food and supply inventories, food orders, production records, change funds, daily revenue received, bank deposits, and timely submission of any required paperwork to the Student Nutrition office.Responsible for knowing and understanding USDA/State of Alaska guidelines for meal pattern requirements.Responsible for two types of food service (serving and preparing), namely elementary school pre-plate and middle/secondary open food service.Performs daily routine tasks to insure that lunches are prepared on schedule for the estimated number of students in the unit.Confirms that proper food serving techniques and portion controls are maintained.Inspects food daily upon receipt.Organizes and assigns work in the kitchen to assure timely preparation of breakfast, lunch, and CACFP programs.Resolves complaints in a timely and equitable manner.Assures regulations pertaining to sanitation and food safety practices are observed and maintained.Monitors employee time records and leave requests.Monitors and records all kitchen equipment temperatures according to regulatory requirements. Reports any maintenance problems to Student Nutrition office.Responsible for maintaining National School Lunch Program (NSLP) compliance of Free and Reduced meals at the point of sale, as well as keeping accurate records of the same in accordance with Student Nutrition Department and government requirements.Responsible for orientation of new and transfer employees, provides training, assigns work direction to Student Nutrition Assistants, and supervises and evaluates Assistants' work as needed.Assigns and directs student aides and substitute employees as needed.Advises Student Nutrition administration of all product concerns.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
