Elementary Reading Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Follow the professional code and policies of the school, and conduct self in a way that promotes the mission of the school.
  • Follow the guidance of the psychosocial and educational staff in working with the individual children as per each child’s academic and social and emotional goals.
  • Identify and assess new and returning students for reading difficulties.
  • Propose strategies and programs that serve the needs of each student who is showing difficulty with reading and language skills.
  • Schedule regular sessions with lower school students with reading difficulties and implement the approved programs and strategies during sessions.
  • Assess students regularly to determine progress and report to classroom teachers and parents.
  • Determine when a child needs more or less time with intense instruction and recommend next steps.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents about methods to support students with reading difficulties.
  • Co-organize with the Head of School and facilitate literacy assessment for lower school students.
  • Support teachers in methods of using new resources in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with teachers to monitor reading progress and provide teachers with strategies to support students outside of scheduled sessions.
  • Create and maintain records of all strategies and programs used for each student.
  • Create and maintain reading progress reports on students with reading difficulties for report card.
  • Use GSuite, specifically Google Drive.
  • Use Google Classroom to communicate with students and families.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: This job operates in a school setting.  School is located on the 4th floor of building. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the school.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 20 pounds. During fire drills, employee will need to use the stairs to go to ground level from 4th floor. Typing required for composing emails and writing reports.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a full time position in an educational facility which is open 8 hours a day. Employee will work 10 months out of the year according academic calendar.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's in Education or related field and 3 years experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Masters in Education or related field and/or 3 years experience
  • Orton Gillingham experience and training
