SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Teaches basic academic subjects to students requiring modified or adapted work, using special techniques or programs to improve behavior and/or academic achievement by performing the following duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university. At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience. Valid Indiana Teaching License in Special Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaches basic subjects such as reading and math, applying lesson techniques designed for short attention spans.
  • Administers achievement tests and evaluates test results to discover level of language and math skills.
  • Selects and teaches reading material and math problems related to everyday life of individual student.
  • Confers with school counselors, school psychologists, and teaching staff to, obtain additional testing information and to gain insight on student behavioral disorders affecting the learning process.
  • Designs special help programs for low achievers and encourages parent teacher cooperation
  • Attends professional meetings, writes reports, and maintains records.
  • Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to find, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
