PURPOSE OF JOB:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following:
Establish communication strategy and message map, ensuring buy-in from key stakeholders. Formalize content strategy and syndication of messages across all communications channels.
Craft compelling content on behalf of the Superintendent, translating political jargon into meaningful stories and developing powerful messaging that drives KCPS' positioning.
Stay up to date on current affairs that may be relevant to Superintendent communications and build a solid network of subject matter experts
Monitor and track proposed or pending legislation that could affect the District's instructional programs, administration or fiscal policies.
Assist KCPS staff in preparing testimony.
Facilitate the interaction between local governmental agencies and community groups to form partnerships to enhance educational outcomes.
Organize events that encourage legislators to visit schools and participate in school and district functions.
Prepare a post legislative session report that summarizes new legislation or changes in statutes that will affect KCPS practices and procedures.
Create a grassroots network that can be quickly and effectively engaged to assist in lobbying efforts.
Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Communications or related field.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with flawless application of grammar and AP style
Ability to develop relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions with a collaborative work style but a bias for action
Project management skills with strong ability to manage details for precision and accuracy
High ethical standards, able to manage very confidential information
Curious and willing to learn, but also driven to excel and deliver results
Strong research capabilities with resourcefulness in gathering information from various sources
Fluency in multi and social media - video production, digital communications
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with media, publications and community agencies in an urban environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, lift objects of at least 10 pounds. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of work year: 12 months (7.5 hours per day)
Benefits: Health and Dental Insurance are provided.
KCPS Defined Benefit Pension plan – mandatory 9% contribution is required from employee and matched by KCPS; Voluntary retirement savings plans are also available.
