CERTIFIED SCHOOL COUNSELOR

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree
  • Hold a valid Florida Educator Certificate in School Counselor
  • Experience in coordinating professional development related to performance responsibilities

REPORTS TO Principal / Administrator

POSITION GOAL

To work diligently and faithfully in the role of instructional personnel to help students meet or exceed annual learning goals, to meet state and local achievement requirements, and to master the skills required to graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary education and work (FS 1012.53)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. *Through individual and group counseling, help each student to:

a) Understand their self in relation to the social and psychological work in which he lives and to develop positive self-esteem.

b) Develop personal decision-making competencies.

c) Resolve special problems, such as living with loss, suicide prevention, new student orientation and school adjustment, divorce, abuse and neglect, substance abuse prevention, dropout prevention, health and safety issues (including pregnancy).

2. *Collect and disseminate to students and their parents, information concerning school offering, opportunities for further education, careers and career training opportunities.

3. *In accordance with the Student Privacy Act, assume the role of consultant in the school’s program of student assessment by:

a) Interpreting information to students, their parents, teachers, and others who are professionally concerned.

b) Helping to identify students with special abilities or needs.

c) Helping students use information about themselves to select courses, programs of study and self-development that maximize their potential and long-range career plans.

4. *Coordinate the use of services available beyond those the school counselor can provide by:

a) Making students and their parents aware of the availability of such services.

b) Making referrals.

c) Maintaining liaison and cooperative working relationships with other student services specialists and with agencies in the community where special services are available.

d) Encouraging the development and/or extension of community agencies for meeting special student needs that are not already adequately met.

5. *Assist in providing placement services for students by:

a) Planning with teachers and administrators for the grouping and scheduling of students.

b) Helping students make appropriate choices of school programs and develop long-range plans of study.

c) Helping students make the successful transition from one school level to another and from high school to post-secondary education or employment.

d) Coordinating with others for the most effective use of the placement services available in the school and the community.

6. *Help parents by:

a) Acting as a consultant regarding the growth and development of their children.

b) Providing information about their children.

c) Providing information about educational and occupational opportunities and requirements, counseling programs and related guidance services available to them and their children.

d) Assisting to develop realistic expectations of their children’s development in relation to their potential.

7. *Serve as a consultant to members of the administrative and teaching staffs in the area of guidance by:

a) Sharing appropriate individual student data.

b) Helping to identify students with special needs and problems.

c) Assisting teachers to secure materials and develop procedures for a variety of classroom group guidance experiences.

d) Serving as an active member of the Student Study Team.

8. *Maintain all records and reports legally required or administratively useful, in support of and to document compliance.

9. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal/ Administrator, which are not in conflict with law, policy or the contract. (VCS 410)

Salary Range - $38,712 to $43,112 Individuals with an advance degree may be eligible for a salary supplement.

G. Pulling -Using upper extremities to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion exerting up to 20 pounds of force.

H. Lifting - Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position through the use of the upper extremities and back muscles exerting up to 20 pounds of force.

I. Finger Dexterity - Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm.

J. Grasping - Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

K. Repetitive Motions - Substantial and continuous movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

L. Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed accurately, loudly or quickly.

M. Hearing Acuity - The ability to perceive speech and other environmental sounds at normal loudness levels.

Working Conditions (conditions the worker will be subject in a position)

A. Indoors - The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
