Assistant (Theater) Director-West HS

EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The assistant director shall be responsible to the producer and technical director for the assistant success of the production, including the selection of the cast, preparation and direction of cast and the design of the technical requirements for the production such as lighting, sound, properties, set construction, costumes, etc.

The assistant director is expected to furnish service from his or her professional experience as to all phases of theatre activity pertaining to the production.

The director may re-assign duties for this position as may fit the needs of the production.

The assistant director is responsible for bringing the actors and the playwright's words and ideas together under one artistic vision. Whatever interpretative approach the assistant director takes, it involves research, collaboration with designers, leadership, an ability to match actors with suitable roles and an understanding of the actors' craft.

The assistant director, along with the director, oversees auditions and casting. The assistant director must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational skills, strong intuition, a clear artistic vision, and a willingness to work with many people with a range of experience and abilities in a nurturing and supportive manner.

The assistant director is responsible to the director for the delivery and interpretation of the show's artistic elements by opening night in a responsible manner. This position responsible for rehearsing and preparing the actors, and communicating the artistic vision to the designers and other creative, technical and administrative staff/volunteers.
