Supervised by: Director of Food and Nutrition Services

General Responsibilities: Assist with planning, organizing, and managing the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) of the City of Manassas Public Schools in accordance with local, state and federal requirements.

Oversees the menu creation process, including recipe and product nutrient management, plans, develops, and creates menus that meet nutritional USDA program requirements.

Completes menu certification and evaluates nutrient analysis, participation, and meal patterns that ensures compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Assists with the procurement of child nutrition foods, and works with approved department vendors to obtain necessary food, chemicals, supplies and products.

Plans, organizes, and supports cafeteria managers with the service of breakfast, lunches and snack foods in accordance with state and federal guidelines.

Assists with maintaining program cost controls, product quality controls, and compliance with federal, state, and local government regulations.

Instructs and informs food service managers and parents in areas pertaining to specialized diets.

Assists in the development, implementation and management of the Summer Food Service Program.

Assists Director of Food and Nutrition Services in the implementation and management of nutrition clubs/committees at each school.

Establishes and oversees a marketing plan to promote the school nutrition program.

Trains cafeteria staff on safety and sanitation standards; ensures standards are met according to HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) standards and conforms to federal, state, and local regulations.

Evaluates each kitchen's operation routinely, completes required site reviews, and consults with managers concerning their evaluations.

Reviews current research to determine health and nutrition-related trends and developments in order to make program recommendations based on this information.

Ensures that all federal, state, and local health regulations are followed.

Complies with and enforces division and school regulations and policies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local health regulations, USDA requirements and the proper handling of food in a school cafeteria environment.

Advanced knowledge of school nutrition and menu planning, food purchasing, inventory and preparation of foods.

Ability to understand and create, modify, and analyze recipes and their nutritional components.

Ability to maintain a good working relationship with internal and external customers, vendors and personnel.

Ability to count and handle money, which necessitates proficiency in general arithmetic.

Advanced knowledge of foodservice operations, equipment, and practices.

Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with cafeteria personnel, students, principals, and the school community.

Ability to organize and maintain necessary records.

Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift approximately 50 pounds, and work well in extreme temperatures.

Ability to consistently enforce policies, procedures, and regulations in a firm but fair manner.

Proficient in the use of computers and technology.

Serves as role model.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess a bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition-related field.

Registered Dietitian (RD) or eligible (RDE) or Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) preferred.

Must possess a minimum of two (2) years of professional menu planning experience or comparable education required.

Two (2) years supervisory experience and food service operational experience preferred.

Must have advanced knowledge of National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program guidelines, specifically the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.

Must have valid driver's license.

Must be Serv-Safe Certified, or willing to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.

Proficient in reading, writing, verbal and communications skills.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions are required.
