    Qualifications:

    Required:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communication, Speech Language Pathology, or Communication Disorders-Speech Sciences with emphasis in Speech Language Hearing Sciences and
    • Completion of an approved School Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program (please attach copy of Certificate) including 100 hours of direct service delivery fulfilling responsibilities consistent with an SLPA and supervised by a licensed Master's level Speech Language Pathologist or
    • Verification by the supervising licensed SLP that the applicant has the following knowledge and skills if a school speech language pathology assistant program was not completed:
    Section 1 - Knowledge about SLPA services delivery including competence in:
    1. The roles and limitations of SLPA responsibilities and need for supervision
    2. Use of appropriate verbal and written language in interactions with students,
    teachers/professionals
    3. Follows oral and written direction including implementation of lesson plans as
    directed by supervising SLP
    4. Does Not engage in administration of standardized assessments or any
    interpretation there of: parent counseling and/or decision making regarding
    services delivered
    5. Collects data, prepares material and performs other duties including
    implementation of designated intervention goals or objectives in
    specified sequence under the supervision of a MA level SLP

    Section 2 - The SLPA is knowledgeable about screening and data collection though he/she may not perform standardized tests including any swallowing or feeding evaluations or interpret results or counsel parents, and is able to:
    1. Assist the SLP with screening and report any data collected directly to
    the SLP
    2. Assist with informal documentation as directed by the SLP
    3. Provide descriptive behavioral observations and
    4. Support the SLP in other ways (record keeping, completing forms, etc.)

    Section 3 - The SLPA is knowledgeable about ethical practice and maintaining appropriate relationships with children/students, families, teachers, and related service professionals and is able to:
    1. Show respect and maintaining confidentiality of all information
    pertaining to students, families
    2. Behave in accordance with educational policies and procedures
    3. Respect cultural values and differences
    4. Request assistance from the supervising SLP as needed
    5. Recognize own professional limitations and performs within the
    boundaries of training and job responsibilities
    6. Does not represent self as an SLP
