The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every childin every school and every neighborhoodhas access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from Middle school college- and career-ready.

The Middle School Science Specialist provides ongoing support and guidance for science curriculum, instruction, assessment and intervention impacting all Middle schools, including Diverse Learners and English Language Learners.

The Middle School Science Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and support for the district-wide vision and best practices for Middle school science teaching and learning aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS);

  • Designing and facilitating professional learning experiences that support high-quality science instruction aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS);

  • Research, evaluate, and prepare recommendations for instructional materials, strategies, and technology for all Middle school science students;

  • Coordinate and inform the development of district-wide science assessments for grades 6-8;

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners across Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines to ensure seamless alignment in planning, implementation, and monitoring/accountability of the district's priorities;

  • Support and inform the development of the CPS Science Content Framework and universally-designed resources aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and college readiness;

  • Provide subject matter expertise for district-wide initiatives;

  • Perform related duties as required.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Middle School Science Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required :

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study. Master's degree in Science Education, or related field preferred.

Type of Experience and Number of Years :

A minimum of 5 years of Middle school science teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Expertise in the Middle school grades in life, physical, earth and space science and engineering;

  • Understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and recent science education research and best practices;

  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports;

  • Ability to develop and lead high-performing teacher teams around a clear vision and/or accomplishment of an assigned task;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences including teachers, administrators and other educational leaders;

  • Self-starter with ability to conduct multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of a collaborative team;



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
