SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

The itinerant interpreter will float to various sites as needed. An educational sign language interpreter/para educator is a specially trained professional who facilitates communication between students who are deaf and other people in the educational environment. The interpreter transliterates all spoken/written language into the sign system most readily understood by the deaf/hard of hearing student or adult and also provides sign to voice interpretation services. The sign language interpreter is a vital component in the supportive services provided to all students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The interpreter is an extension of the teacher and is respected and supported as a member of the educational team. The interpreter also functions in all the roles and responsibilities of a para educator or instructional assistant.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Instruct deaf or hard of hearing students in designed instruction setting using sign language skills.
  2. Train the deaf/hard of hearing students in the community using sign language skills.
  3. Instruct deaf/hard of hearing (DI-D/HH) students in classroom under guidance of the teacher.
  4. Prepare to instruct.
  5. Other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Graduation from an accredited interpreter training program (ITP) with previous experience interpreting in a school setting preferred. Applicants must also demonstrate and pass a skill assessment and interview from the school district. Certification or endorsement from NAD (National Association of the Deaf), RID (Registered Interpreter of the Deaf), or WSRID (Washington State Registered Interpreter of the Deaf) is desired.
  2. Must be willing to work at various sites as assigned.
  3. Must be willing to toilet, feed, and lift up to 50 pounds if working with Developmentally Impaired students.
  4. Basic computer skills required.
  5. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Work Schedule-Days and hours are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Benefits-Fringe benefits are provided for employees who work at least half-time (20 hours per week) or more in a regular position. Stipends are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement as negotiated.
  3. Association Membership-Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Union, a newly-elected employee must either become a member of the association, pay an equivalent representation fee, or based on bona fide religious objections, pay an equivalent amount to a nonreligious charity mutually agreed upon by the employee and the association.
