CPS is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to represent CPS in defense of workers compensation matters before the Illinois Workers Compensation Commission. The Assistant General Counsel will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Manage a full caseload, exercising sound independent judgment on evaluation, strategy, and time management;

  2. Track caseload, case outcomes, and document costs and cost savings;

  3. Demonstrate utmost professionalism, a strong work ethic, integrity, initiative, and tenacious analytical and strategic thinking skills;

  4. Work closely and in collaboration with CPS Talent (CPS' human resources division), and with adjusters and supervisors from CPS' third party vendor;

  5. Work cooperatively with supervisors, attorneys and staff within the Law Department;

  6. Advise on compliance issues (ADA, return to work programs, union benefits);

  7. P rovide client counseling, guidance and support across a network of schools and departments.



Type of Education and License Required :

  • Juris Doctorate and Illinois license to practice law in good standing.


The Ideal Candidate Possesses Experience in One or More of the Following:

  • Minimum of 3 years of workers compensation experience;
  • Extensive knowledge of the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act ( 820 ILCS 305) ; ability to quickly review and analyze voluminous medical records; familiarity with Google Sheets and Excel; excellent writing skills.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Proven ability to manage a heavy caseload with significant financial and/or reputational exposure.

  • Self-motivated with an ability to build trusting relationships with diverse group of colleagues and clients.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage numerous cases and matters simultaneously under pressure.

  • Ability to serve as a zealous advocate for CPS while concurrently maintaining high standards of integrity.



Residency Requirement :

  • As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
