Position Title: Instructional Coach
Department: Teaching and Learning
Location: Salem High School
Responsible to: High School Principal (Primary), Academic Dean (Secondary)
Date: 2018-2019

Purpose of Position

To provide literacy-focused coaching and support that strengthens instructional practices across high school classrooms.

Summary of Position

The Instructional Coach will work directly with the High School Principal, the administrative team, Head Teachers, and Teacher Leaders to offer direction and support with curriculum development and review, high quality instructional practices, assessment development, and data analysis. The primary goal of the Instructional Coach is to build capacity for expert instruction classrooms, as well as to support the established practices of the high school's tiered support structure.

Responsibilities

Coaching - Building Capacity

• Facilitate curriculum planning, development, and revision for courses in collaboration with Head Teachers and Teacher Leaders.

• Work with teachers one-on-one and in small groups to plan lessons from standards, use a wide range of curriculum materials, determine student groupings, and implement research-based instructional strategies to support implementation of high, quality core instruction,

• Foster teacher collaboration and sharing of best practice,

• Introduce best practices in the area of pedagogy through demonstration lessons, co-teaching, co-planning, peer observation, study groups, and professional development workshops,

• Build teacher capacity to interpret and use a range of assessment tools to plan lessons and address individual student needs in the respective subject area,

• Articulate goals and practices to meet objectives of the school and District improvement plans as needed to staff and parents,

• Meet regularly with the Principal and/or Academic Dean to analyze data and student work, coordinate Instructional Rounds, and discuss next steps for school-based professional development that supports growth in student achievement and engagement,

• Engage in advanced training opportunities designed to strengthen content knowledge, pedagogy, tiered instructional practice, and coaching skills,

• Provide assistance to departmental members and teams in identifying data-driven SMART goals and research-based methods for improving student achievement.
• Monitor progress towards meeting school-wide literacy achievement goal set within improvement plan.
• Provide leadership in preparing and analyzing common assessment data.

• As directed by the principal provide direct instruction and progress monitoring for individual or groups of students as needed (up to 20% of time).

Note: The evaluation of teachers is not part of the Coach's responsibility. However, the role of the Coach is to provide non-evaluative, lesson plan and instructional feedback to teachers.

Job Requirements
  • Qualifications
    • MA certification as a secondary level teacher
    • Three or more years of successful teaching
    • Strong content and pedagogical knowledge of high school courses
    • Experience with standards-based assessment and the effective use of student data
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience providing professional development for teachers; understanding how adults learn
    • SEI endorsement required
    • Commitment to serve all students, specifically ELLs and students with disabilities
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Masters degree preferred

Citizenship, residency or work visa required

New Teacher Orientation for all first year teachers and all teaching staff new to the Salem Public Schools for the 2018/2019 School Year will be held on August 21st and 22nd, 2018. This is a required commitment of all new teaching staff. Professional Development for all teaching staff (new and returning) will begin on August 28, 2018.
