TITLE: School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet the certification requirements of the State of Delaware Department of Education, this includes a B.S., R.N.
REPORTS TO: School Principal (or Assistant)
JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical care.
2. Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.
3. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
4. Assumes authority for the care of a student, staff member, or visitor, who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
5. Visits student homes when necessary.
6. Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health program.
7. Contacts homes of children referred by principals.
8. Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.
9. Prepares and submits reports as required.
10. Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with Board policy on infectious and contagious diseases.
11. Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student defects.
12. Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
13. Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
14. Participates in in-service training program.
15. Appraises and identifies health needs of students and school personnel.
16. Plans and administers recommended screening tests such as vision, hearing, orthopedic, tuberculin testing and physical examinations.
17. Encourages the correction of medical problems by working with parents, teachers, and community agencies.
18. Serves as liaison between the medical community and the schools.
19. Provides health counseling to the students, parents, and school personnel, keeping in mind the limitations as well as abilities.
20. Presents health education informally by means of bulletin boards and opportune teaching moments and formally in the classroom when necessary.
21. Performs other duties as assigned by the building principal that pertain to nursing, health, or medical matters.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation and Department of Education guidelines.
