JOB TITLE: Custodian

REPORTS TO: Head Custodian/Director of Operations

JOB GOAL: An Eastside custodian will play an essential role in the growth and development of each of our students and our organization. Our busy, parent/student-focused building needs a reliable, detail oriented custodian to assume the role of caretaker of the building and facilities, with the feeling of responsibility of not only working with maintenance, cleaning, and care, but also working with people. The custodian needs to understand children and their need for guidance. Students usually look up to adults in a school setting and appreciate a smile and a cheery word. They are usually open to suggestions and will cooperate with attempts to be helpful. The majority of our students will respond to firmness, fairness and friendliness. Professional appearance and demeanor as well as excellent customer service skills are a must. An ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing as well as having effective time management and organizational skills is required. An attention to detail will help to be successful in this position. Knowledge of minor repair work and floor maintenance is desired.

OVERVIEW: EastSide Charter School (PreK-8, founded in 1997) and Family Foundations Academy (K-4 and 5-8 campuses, founded in 2006) are free, public schools that collectively education approximately 1300 students across three campuses in Wilmington, and New Castle Delaware. Both schools formed a partnership in January 2015 to be overseen and supported by a Central Office. Both schools pride themselves on being community-based schools, using multiple partnerships, strong relationships with families, and a dedicated and hard-working staff to ensure academic success for all students. Since 2011, EastSide has undergone a significant turnaround. Growing an average of 30 proficiency points in Math and Reading, EastSide has been touted by Delaware's governor and the Delaware Department of Education as a model for school turnaround and urban school success. Family Foundations is in the midst of change in leadership and a new direction to drive it towards continued academic excellence. This monumental partnership, the first of its kind in the State of Delaware will prove that students of all types and schools regardless of their location or demographic can be consistently high performing in every facet. As a result of our desired success, we hope to improve our communities by ensuring that our students develop the character and skills necessary to being an influential and contributing member of the community and global society. This position is suited for someone who is willing to do "Whatever it Takes" to support our students in being successful in school and in life.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The Custodian will:

Restrooms

• Empty Wastebaskets
• Mop and disinfect floors
• Clean and disinfect sinks
• Clean and disinfect mirrors
• Clean and disinfect toilet bowls-seats, urinals & pipes
• Empty sanitary napkin receptacles
• Check hand soap, paper towels, & tissue supplies
• Check that toilets, urinals, faucets & drains are working
• Clean doors and partitions
• Check deodorant blocks or screens
• Spot clean walls
• Replace lights
• Clean baseboards
• Clean fixtures
• Clean exterior of all dispensers
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Classrooms

• Vacuum all carpeted areas
• Sweep all tiled floors with dust mop
• Empty wastebaskets
• Clean sinks and faucets
• Empty pencil sharpeners
• Clean window glass on doors
• Clean whiteboards at the end of the week
• Dust all ledges and other surfaces
• Clean shades or blinds
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Hallways

• Sweep all halls and entryways with a dust mop
• Vacuum entry carpets
• Clean and disinfect drinking fountains
• Spot clean walls and baseboards
• Dust all ledges, tops of coat racks, and tops of lockers
• Clean door glass and steel plates on gym doors and entryways

• Replace lightbulbs
• Clean light fixtures
• Sweep stairs and floors of utility rooms(non-classrooms)
• Clean stairs
• Wet mop hallways
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Gym

• Sweep entire gym floor
• Mop entire gym floor
• Spot clean walls of gym
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Offices

• Sweep office floors and vacuum any carpets
• Empty wastebaskets
• Dust all ledges and other surfaces
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Miscellaneous

• Ceiling vents in upstairs classrooms should be put in as summer approaches and taken out again as winter approaches
• Signs of vandalism or abuse of the facilities should be reported to the Head Custodian/Director of Operations
• Minor repairs should be done as needed or upon request
• Maintain adequate heat throughout the building
• Maintain all deliveries and shipments from the main office
• Set up and take down tables and chairs for school functions
• Maintain the entryways and walkways during winter(including shoveling and salting)
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Summer Cleaning and Maintenance

• All tile floors are to be stripped, sealed and waxed
• During winter break heavily used area are to be stripped and waxed
• During Spring break heavily used area are to be stripped and waxed
• All carpeted areas are shampooed
• All baseboards get a deep clean
• All glass is thoroughly cleaned
• Window sills are sanded and varnished
• All wall surfaces are cleaned

• Interior walls are painted
• Lockers are cleaned and disinfected
• Thorough cleaning of all white boards, desks, chairs, blinds, shades and bookshelves
• Other duties as assigned by Head Custodian/Director of Operations

Experience:

• An Eastside Custodian must have:
• at least three years' experience working with school-aged children in a school-like setting
• at least three years of custodian experience

• Satisfactory criminal, child abuse, FBI clearances and TB test

COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION:

Length of Work Year: 12 months, select Saturdays, and occasional evening and weekend commitments will also be required.
