Position Title: Bus Driver – Special Education (5.52 hours)

Pay Grade: 9 Period of Employment: 9 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Director of Transportation

General Responsibilities: Transports students to and from school in a safe and secure manner, while maintaining order on the bus.

Essential Duties:

Provides safe daily home-to-school transportation services in an efficient and punctual time schedule.

Provides care and supervision of the students.

Reports to work on time and checks the sign-up sheet on the board for additional assignments.

Checks-in with the dispatcher for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers.

Accepts additional assignments as required; i.e. covering routes of absent drivers.

Performs state required pre-trip inspection on a daily basis and report any problems.

Maintains a clean bus, ensuring a healthy environment for students and maintaining presentable school transportation.

Assists the driver in checking the bus after every run for sleeping students, lost items, and damage.

Ensures passenger safety and discipline by reporting misconduct to a building administrator and issuing referrals of students.

Refuels assigned bus and checks oil and water levels regularly.

Remains abreast of weather conditions and school closings, early dismissals, or late openings.

Prepares and completes reports such as a daily maintenance form, timesheets, route schedules, field trip forms, mileage records, and discipline referrals.

Adheres to the Manassas City Schools Transportation Handbook.

Attends in-service workshops on such subjects as AIDS, substance abuse, safety procedures, and defensive driving techniques.

Conducts semi-annual bus evacuation drills as required by the Manassas City Schools Transportation department.

Reports all accidents immediately to the transportation dispatcher.

Ensures that all students are properly seated before putting the vehicle in motion and during the entire trip.

Maintains a good driving record and maintain a CDL as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Maintains CPR and First Aid Certifications.

Returns children to school if a responsible party is not present at the bus stop.

Reports all moving violations, personal or work related, including DUI's.

Maintains confidentiality of student's medical diagnosis, issues, and student information.

Develops relationships with students.

Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.

Discusses any misconduct with the child's teacher and reward good behavior.

Assists the bus attendant in monitoring students with special conditions, such as seizures and heart conditions.

Helps the bus attendant ensure that students are properly seated and secured when necessary.

Supervises the bus attendant.

Adheres to all traffic laws and DOT regulations.

Submits to drug testing when required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General knowledge of the city's layout.

Ability to operate a radio for communication.

Ability to lift minimum of 50 pounds.

Practices patience and understanding with children.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school officials, the general public, co-workers, students, and parents.

Serves as role model.

Knowledge of passenger's disabilities.

Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.

Assists the bus attendant in monitoring students with special conditions – such as heart conditions and seizures.

Able to detect equipment malfunction.

Knowledge of and compliance with the State Board of Education's pupil rider safety instruction for emergency evacuation drills and fire drills.

Requisite Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Minimum five (5) years driving experience with a valid driver's license required.

Must pass a Department of Transportation physical, drug and alcohol testing, and a tuberculosis test.

Must possess a Commercial Driver's License.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Physical Requirements:

Duties are performed on a school bus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to loud noises, fumes or airborne particles, noxious odors, vibrations from driving a bus, and traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel, use foot controls to drive, reach with hands and arms, climb, bend, stoop, and kneel, and to speak and hear. The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures including the use of any of the emergency exits. This also includes the pushing or pulling of 50 pounds or more. Visual abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required. Undergo an annual physical examination before returning to work in the fall.
