Job Requirements
  • Licensed or license eligible as a school social worker/school adjustment counselor
  • Three years of employment as a school social worker or school adjustment counselor public school setting preferred
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with families, community members, collateral contracts, students and staff verbally and in written form
  • Excellent time managements skills; ability to triage/prioritize given competing needs
  • Must be Crisis Prevention Intervention and restraint trained or willing to be trained
  • General understanding of the legal requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Summary

In accordance with the policy and procedures of Salem Public Schools, the School Adjustment Counselor provides a spectrum of therapeutic interventions and supports to identified students, family, and with staff. In addition to individual and group school-based counseling and social skills supports, the school adjustment counselor provides other vital roles including 504 Coordinator and Crisis Team member. The School Adjustment Counselor supports the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students with Individualized Educational Plans. Supports and services designated in the IEPS are the primary duty of the school adjustment counselor and must be implemented with fidelity.

General School Adjustment Counselor Responsibilities Include:
  • Contribute to positive school climate
  • Confer with parents, teachers, other counselors, and administrators to resolve student related concerns
  • Recommend and implement specially designed instruction/therapeutic approaches to learning
  • Offer consultation and support regarding students with emotional or academic concerns
  • Support teachers in developing & implementing behavior support plans in the classroom
  • Complete needed paper work and job related functions in a timely manner in accordance with DESE guidelines
  • Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments
  • Work with behavior specialist to create and implement Positive Behavioral Intervention Plans
  • Facilitate Tier 3 intervention groups on topics including social skills, conflict resolution, substance abuse prevention etc.
  • Evaluate, serve and progress monitor students per IEP, 504 Plan, or as needed
  • Attend IEP meetings assigned by Team Chair
  • Use data to inform student decisions and inform counseling efficacy
  • Attend student common planning and intervention support meetings to monitor student progress
  • Complete classroom observations and/or evaluations assigned during student evaluation process
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress
  • Establish and supervise peer counseling and peer tutoring programs
  • Respond appropriately to building and district crisis
  • Routinely attended district and school based meetings, training and professional development
  • Other duties as requested by school Principal or Pupil Personnel Department

Salary at Teachers Union Step and Column with Differential for added days/hours required

New Teacher Orientation for all first year teachers and all teaching staff new to the Salem Public Schools for the 2018/2019 School Year will be held on August 21st and 22nd, 2018. This is a required commitment of all new teaching staff. Professional Development for all teaching staff (new and returning) will begin on August 28, 2018.
