POSITION TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL COUNSELING - 236 DAYS

REPORTS TO:
School Principal; Supervisor, Secondary Counseling and Student Support Services; Director, Office of Student Services; Associate Superintendent, Student Learning and Accountability

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess an earned master's degree in school counseling from an approved school counselor education program. Must uphold the ethical and professional standards of professional school counseling practices and support and maintain the development of a school counseling program that is based on the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) National Model. Three years of successful full time experience as a school counselor preferred. Knowledgeable of counseling theory and practice, public relations, school law, personnel management, administration, supervision, curriculum and education processes. Must possess leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Meets Virginia requirements for certification with an endorsement as a school counselor to include a minimum of 100 clock hours of practicum experience in one setting (PreK-6 or 7-12) and an internship of 100 hours minimum in a different setting (PreK-6 or 7-12). At a minimum, meet requirements for local administrative endorsement. Administration and Supervision (K-12) endorsement preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

The Director of School Counseling serves as a member of the administrative team and provides leadership and organization for the members of the school counseling department as school counselors assist students in developing a realistic understanding of themselves, help students develop positive relationships with others, facilitate academic growth, aid students in becoming self-directive, and assist students in planning and preparing for post-secondary experiences.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

•Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in providing a World-Class Education.
•Collaborate with school counselors and other stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program based upon the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Prince William County Public Schools, the Standards for School Counseling Programs in VirginiaPublic Schools, and the American School Counselor Association Standards, as well as school data.
•Work within the beliefs, philosophy, and mission statements that have been developed by each school counseling department to align with the school and School Division's mission statements.
•Advocate for the elimination of barriers to access and assure a rigorous curriculum for all students.
•Ensure that student academic program planning is provided to assist each student in selecting appropriate and challenging courses based upon their educational and career goals.
•Apply legal and ethical standards of the professional school counselor.
•Manage the delivery of school counseling services to address the academic, personal/social, and career domains as developmentally appropriate.
•Develop and monitor the master schedule.
•Plan, manage, and supervise the grade reporting process.
•Manage student records.
•Serve at the Student Management System (SMS) Administrator, as applicable per school.
•Compile, generate, and interpret data related to student achievement.
•Administer and interpret testing, as applicable per school.
•Coordinate Crisis Management Team.
•Coordinate and plan all school counseling informational programs for students and parents in conjunction with individual school counselors assigned to each program.
•Manage the student enrollment and registration process.
•Supervise and consult with the career counselor regarding delivery of career and college counseling services.
•Prepare school counseling handbook of all program activities, to include school counselor responsibilities.
•Supervise the application and selection of students for special programs.
•Participate in and attend various meetings related to school counseling services.
•Provide information regarding professional development opportunities available for school counselors.
•Assist in the screening and selection of new school counselors and support staff.
•Provide leadership in the evaluative process for school counselors.
•Coordinate referrals to outside agencies.
•Provide school counseling services to students as designated by agreement with school administration. Ensure that school counselors spend a minimum of 60% of their time counseling students.
•Provide ongoing audits of the high school counseling program.
•Complete other duties as assigned by the school principal as aligned with American School Counselor Association recommendations.
DIMENSIONS
Budget responsibilities: Provide the principal with information needed to make staffing and budget decisions; manage the school counseling department budget. Employees supervised: Assist principal by providing input regarding the evaluation of the school counseling and support services staff.

Grade 17: $80,218 - $145,015 per year
