Position Title: Instructional Assistant - Gifted & Talented Education

Pay Grade: 6 Period of Employment: 9.5 months

Description Approved/Revised: 8/18 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Building Principal

General Responsibilities: Assists students as directed by the classroom instructor teacher supporting individual students, the teacher and the class. Organizes testing materials and assists with filing and other duties for Gifted & Talented evaluation and eligibility cycles.

Essential Duties:

During classes:

Supports the classroom instructor by assisting students as directed.

Provides care and supervision of the students.

Observes and manages student behavior; works together with the teacher on behavior plans and their implementation.

Assists students in research and classroom activities.

Escorts students when required.

Helps locate and prepare materials for daily class work.

Reports computer issues to IT if unable to resolve them.

Performs clerical duties for the classroom instructor.

Maintains the data for students being watched for possible Gifted and Talented eligibility.

Attends Gifted and Talented personnel meetings.

During Eligibility Cycles (in addition to regular classroom duties)

Maintains master referral spreadsheet, updates as needed (including students referred, testing needed, portfolio needed, parent permissions).

Collects all testing materials, copies all portfolios, and distributes materials to Gifted and Talented staff.

Administers tests for entry into the Gifted and Talented program such as OLSAT, NNAT, Stanford, as needed.

Assists students in preparing and completing portfolios for Gifted and Talented eligibility, as needed.

Scores and norms student tests for eligibility (for standardization of scoring and norming), as needed.

Attends and supports Gifted and Talented eligibility meetings.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

General knowledge of the Gifted & Talented program.

Excellent communication skills.

Ability to follow directions given by the classroom instructor.

Exhibit patience with students and staff.

Database management skills.

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to monitor student safety.

Ability to interact with students, staff, and parents.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to assist students as needed.

Serve as role model.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess a minimum of 60 college credit hours; or an Associate's Degree or higher; or have successfully passed the Para Pro Assessment.

Experience in an educational setting and/or prior teaching/instructional experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone, and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
