Job Title: Director of School Climate and Non-Instructional Activities
Terms: Managerial Tier D
Reports to: School Principal

The Mildred Avenue K - 8 School is seeking an exceptional Director of School Climate to work primarily with our elementary grades. Our school is a rapidly improving K - 8 School in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston. We are committed to the success of every child and the accelerated development of all students by providing rigorous, student-centered instruction; targeted, data-based interventions; and enriching arts and athletics opportunities on a daily basis. This position will work as a member of the school's leadership team to support a focused learning environment in which all students are cared for and all students succeed.

General Summary
The Director of School Climate oversees the school's operational activities and is responsible for all matters of school management and oversight that do not directly relate to instruction. The Director of School Climate will handle all non-instructional obligations so that the school leader can focus on student achievement and the professional development of the teaching staff. The Director of School Climate will report to the School Principal and work closely with members of the BPS Central Office Operations Team (liaisoning with OHC, Budget, Food Services, Office of Data and Accountability, Communications, COO Office, etc.) The Director of School Climate may manage the School Secretary and other members of the school-based staff in non-instructional positions.

Responsibilities:
Budget and Finance
  1. Fiscal Oversight: work with the school principal and BPS central finance staff to develop and manage the schools budget
  2. Manage Probable Org process in conjunction with other school administrators.
  3. Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions and submit them to the BPS central finance staff for processing [or manage the school secretary in doing this]
  4. Participate in monthly meetings to review/account for budget variances
    Manage school purchase order process

School Operations
  1. Prepare campus for new school year by doing everything from ordering furniture, equipment, and classroom supplies to ensuring school services (i.e. student food services, student transportation services) are lined up and ready for action
  2. Maintain a clean, neat and highly functional campus by managing custodial personnel and third-party contracts for trash removal, recycling, and security
  3. Manage the schools food and transportation services by ensuring delivery of service and coordinating with service providers
  4. Manage the schools supply and asset inventory
  5. Collaborate with administrative team to create master schedule
  6. Manage all external partnerships for the school
  7. Work collaboratively with other school leaders to ensure effective communications to staff, parents, community.


School Administration:
  1. Oversee the effective implementation of core school operational practices as related to student and staff attendance tracking, supply requests and fulfillment, student enrollment/discharges, student transportation, field trip planning and execution, etc.
  2. Ensure the timely implementation of all items on monthly administrative, staff and family calendars
  3. Provide oversight of the planning and execution of school special events, such as open houses, formals, and graduation
  4. Ensure that student records are properly maintained and updated at the school
Early Warning Indicator (EWI) & Intervention Meetings
  • Facilitate team meetings dedicated to identifying student needs and identifying appropriate interventions, and revisiting these students at subsequent meetings.
  • Support successful implementation of school-wide attendance and behavior programs.
  • Provide job-embedded supports for multidisciplinary teacher teams responsible for implementing strategies, incentives, and interventions regarding student attendance behavior and course performance.
  • Provide regular accessibility to EWI data (user-friendly form) and other outcome measures, to teachers, collaborating partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with evaluation activities and data-analyses.

Management and Leadership
  1. Actively serve on the school's leadership team.
  2. Directly supervise and evaluate the School Secretary, and other staff as agreed upon

Knowledge, Skills & Characteristics
  1. Acute attention to detail coupled with the ability to think and act strategically
  2. Communication and management skills necessary to ensure a smooth school operation
  3. Ability to create, monitor, and maintain systems that enhance organizational efficiency
  4. Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, highly disciplined, but sometimes unpredictable school environment
  5. Proficiency with databases, MS Office, and other software applications
  6. Willingness to work autonomously, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of senior staff, as needed
  7. Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and roll-up-my-sleeves attitude
  8. Strong belief that all students in BPS can achieve at high levels.
  9. Strong collaborative ethic toward families and staff

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree is prefered
  2. Minimum 2-4 years general management experience
  3. Knowledge of financial statements and prior experience managing a budget
  4. Previous school experience a plus


NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school.

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
