Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, plus one year of progressively more responsible experience working with children. Can demonstrate basic knowledge of child growth and development, group interaction, health, safety, and first-aid methods; sensitivity to the ways in which physical and intellectual disabilities affect the behavior of children; ability to establish warm and supportive relationships with children on both a group and individual basis; ability to assist with providing a wide variety of stimulating experiences for children to meet their individual, intellectual, and emotional needs; ability to assist teacher with use and adaptation of a range of instructional techniques and to participate in the monitoring and control of a wide range of behaviors. May be required to lift wheelchairs and related equipment and/or to assist another person with transferring, lifting, or positioning students; may be trained in the use of a particular type of equipment or a specialized skill, such as ability to communicate with children with special disability (e.g., deaf/blind and nonverbal); and some positions may require physical strength, agility, and dexterity to restrain students whose behavior is disruptive or dangerous to self or other students.
