Job Summary
Evaluates Early Intervention (EI) students and special placement students eligible for entry or re-entry to the District to determine their need for school-based physical therapy. Serves on special teams to reevaluate and address concerns related to the initial Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan evaluations. Provides expert information to enhance the parents', IEP Team's, and other stakeholders' understanding of services proposed by the physical therapist in accordance with state and federal laws which mandate that students receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. Establishes an interconnected, collaborative and mutually supportive relationship with newly appointed colleagues and school-based physical therapy peers who may benefit from mentoring support.
Essential Functions
  • Participates with the school team ensuring students receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
  • Performs a physical therapy evaluation as appropriate for EI and special placement students returning to the District to determine their school-based physical therapy needs.
  • Conducts high priority case management and evaluation.
  • Consults with school teams to ensure that appropriate school-based physical therapy services are being recommended and provided to help ensure students are provided with opportunities to engage in learning in the least restrictive environment.
  • Works with school teams and physical therapy peers to ensure physical therapy-based instructional changes and supplementary aids and services are employed prior to the use of restrictive services and placements.
  • Serves as a liaison between the school-based therapist, EI students, returning students, and stakeholders, as students transition to the District to help ensure students receive the services proposed in their IEP/504 Plan.
  • Investigates, prepares and participates in due process meetings and cases.
  • Provides information relevant to physical therapy for use of highly restrictive settings and supports at the classroom level.
  • Offers information relevant to physical therapy for resolution sessions, due process hearings, and settlements.
  • Meets Access billing and documentation requirements.
  • Participates in physical therapists evaluations.
  • Participates in ongoing caseload/workload management, review, evaluation and assignments, making recommendations to ensure equitable distribution of the caseload.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in physical therapy.
  • Three years of full-time, paid, professional experience in clinical and school-based physical therapy.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • the principles, practices, methods, materials, and techniques used in physical therapy.
  • the possible hazard to patients during treatment and of the necessary precautionary and remedial measures and techniques.
  • community organizations and facilities, especially those involved in services for individuals with disabilities.
  • the psychological and educational processes involved in the treatment of the severely and profoundly mentally disabled and the physically and orthopedically disabled.
  • the differences between school-based and clinical physical therapy services.
Demonstrated ability to:
  • understand, interpret, and implement the oral and written instructions of a physician or certified registered nurse practitioner.
  • select, apply, and adapt materials and methods appropriate for the therapeutic treatment of physically challenged children and young adults.
  • gain the confidence and cooperation of pupils while rendering therapeutic services and instruct them, their parents, teachers, and staff in understanding and dealing with disabilities and health problems.
  • exercise sound judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • participate in due process meetings and cases.
  • prepare and maintain thorough and comprehensive records and reports.
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
