Summary

The Student Transportation Services Specialist coordinates the specialized transportation needs of Salem students while supporting the district's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support System (PBIS) framework to improve student support and positive behavior management on all school buses. Working primarily in the Office of Transportation, the Student Transportation Services Specialist will work closely with Pupil Personnel Services' staff members to ensure that all specialized transportation needs of our students are met in a timely and cost-efficient manner.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, track and monitor specialized transportation services for Salem students who require specialized transportation
  • Prepare, secure, and serve as the primary liaison with specialized transportation vendors
  • Coordinate with other districts to potentially share transportation resources for out of district students
  • Under the supervision of the Transportation Manager and the PPS Office, implement standard operating procedures, guidelines, and facilitate training modules to increase the capacity of bus drivers and monitors to implement successful behavior management strategies while students are on Salem school buses
  • Work with PBIS & school teams to develop strategies to resolve challenges and issues that arise during the course of providing transportation services to Salem students
  • Develop and implement proactive communications strategies with parents, drivers, monitors, vendors, teachers, and school principals
  • Troubleshoot bussing related concerns with families, staff and vendors
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the transportation department staff to develop operational efficiencies and improved communications with customers as well as other departments and schools within the district
  • Provide dispatch services in the transportation office
  • Work with other members of the Transportation team to coordinate the district's Crossing Guards, including hiring, training, and ongoing support
  • Assist transportation team with planning efforts
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Education, and Experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, the general public, and other district and city officials
  • Exposure to and understanding of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Systems or other behavior management systems (or demonstrated ability and willingness to learn)
  • Demonstrated ability to handle heated customer service situations with patience, tolerance and empathy
  • Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment such as computers, printers, faxes, scanners, and a variety software programs, etc.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Can prioritize multiple tasks, work effectively in a changing environment, meet deadlines, and take initiative and direction
  • Commitment to providing high quality customer service
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Flexibility to meet changing work needs and demands
  • Experience with student transportation (ideally specialized transportation) preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English required.
  • Safety care trained (after hire)
  • High School degree required; some college preferred. Bachelor's degree strongly preferred.

Supervision

Overall supervision of the Student Transportation Services Specialist will be the responsibility of the Transportation Manager.

Schedule

The Student Transportation Services Specialist will work a full-time, year-round schedule. The weekly and/or monthly schedule for the Coordinator of Student Support and Transportation Services will be determined by the Transportation Manager.
