QUALIFICATIONS:
1. New Jersey Teaching Certificate required.
2. Training and experience equivalent to a Master\'s Degree, preferably in literacy.
3. Successful teaching experience at the elementary school level (minimum 4 years).
4. Demonstrated leadership skills in the areas of curriculum development & instructional improvement
5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
6. Successful in creating collaborative relationships or coalitions.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
8. Commitment to school design and philosophy.
9. Required criminal history background check, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status & NJ residency.
REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB GOALS: The Literacy Coach is charged with using best practices to provide direct instruction to students and to support, elementary teachers, instructional aides and the elementary literacy program in general. The position is collegial, not supervisory. Specific priorities and assignments will be determined on an annual basis by the principal. Literacy coaches will provide service to students while also serving in a coaching/support capacity.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support to Teachers
Collaborate with teacher to develop effective literacy curriculum and lessons.
Track student progress in literacy through assessment and provide information to staff.
Develop and implement short-term interventions and student improvement plans in literacy.
Model effective literacy instruction.
Provide professional development on effective, research-based instruction techniques.
Maintains records of meetings as needed to provide a record of activities and progress.
Support to Students
Provide literacy instruction to targeted students one-on-one, in small groups, or to the whole class.
Instructional planning and delivery should be collaborative with the classroom teacher who is responsible for all children in his/her class.
Instruction should not supplant the work or responsibility of the classroom teacher.
Support student use of the school library through mini-lessons and appropriate book selection.
Coordinate and support afterschool and Saturday literacy interventions.
Support to Parents
Communicates with parents about the literacy program.
Provides workshops for parents that help them better support their child\'s literacy development.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employee. Salary to be recommended by Executive Director and approved by board.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board\'s policy on evaluation.
